I got my ass kicked by a jazz pianist after rehearsal last night, and it felt good, as it has been a long time since a keyboardist gave me a whooping.
After playing covers for a couple of days, I thought I would go down to this little jazz gig where friends of mine sit in and cut loose. Since two days of psychedelic jams just happened, a change of style was in order before calling it a night.
I played with an Upright bass, drums, percussion, and a smokin' Sax player. The Yamaha 7' Grand sounded great, and was mic'd with a nice pair of AKG's. I just finished playing Neffertitti, and Giant Steps by Coltrane and the rhythm section was on. After patting myself on the back and slammin' a Jager w/ WJ, this chap comes up and says good job on Neffertitti my friend, I introduce ourselves and say can I get you a drink, and he says no thank you, I can't drink while I play, then he walks up on stage and smoked my ass. I almost cried he was so good. It's been a long time since I was publicly beaten, but this guy really floored everyone. He was so good when they ended the first song he played, nobody could hardly clap as they stared with open mouths. I knew he was a monster right away, and bless my sweeties heart as she tried to say, I bet he can't jam on synths like you. I said I bet he can.
At any rate, I will be in hiding for a couple of weeks, as this beating has caused me to woodshed some of those amazing chops I heard, and I am thankful. It's a nice reminder that when you practice, if you just leep playing things you're already good at, you won't get better.
I won't forget this beating for a few years, or the name that came with it,.......................Monty Alexander.
If I only Had My Scope Synths There, I Could Have Been A Contender !!

anyway Jimmy, a compliment by this dude isn't too bad either - strength & honorYou better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime
cheers, Tom
Well I feel better now, I didn't know he was so well known.
You guys should download his first LP. I am transcribing it now, as he had so many chops, I only remembered the ones that hurt the most.
He studied under Vince ( Lawrenece ) Maggio at the UIniversity Of Miami, along with Jerry Coker, and Gerry Mulligan back in the late 60's early 70's. Some real jazz cats from Miles Davis Cool School.
