just they had to invent a ceramic compound surface with gaffa glue on the back, and they're done. ceramic tiles lost? just fix them with
Gaffa Spacecraft Self Repair Tape (tm), the only one approved by the NASA :D

russians have a different approach, when it comes to build up something. "russian technology" is kinda proverbial for obviously ancient and "rasped out of a solid block of metal", but thus strong and almost impossible to destroy items. there was an article recently on 50 years of the kalashnikov, which kinda supports this theory.
