Right, you know how all the new MB's dont have an option to disable the ACPI in the bios?
Solution is simple get a bios that lets you do this from http://www.biosmods.com/
only apply's to abit, epox, and IWill boards
I'm afraid, but they are stable mods.
The other solution if you mb is not there is to obtain a beta bios, normally beta bioses have a lot of extra options (including ACPI disable), and in most circumstances tend to be pretty stable
so that means grovelling to MB manufacturer, or talking to someone in the know, but if it solves your problem it will be well worth it!

Plus the other tip is;
If you do install XP/2000 as standard PC, and you get ticked off that your computer doesn't turn itself off. Then you can remedy this by installing 'LEGACY APM support' through add new hardware.
Now my computer has all the features provided by acpi, but without any of the hassle.

An easier way to add APM back into a 'Standard PC' install: Device Manager, View, Show Hidden Devices.

Now, you should see NT Apm/Legacy Support as an item in your list, probably with a red x mark through it. Right click, and select Enable. That should be it, your computer can now shutdown properly.

There seems to be no NT Apm/Legacy Support in my W2K Device Manager (hidden devices shown). How do I get it installed? Is there other easy ways to change back to Standard PC?

Well, you need to add the legacy APM support through, control panel > add new hardware > add new hardware device > install hardware manually > NT/APM legacy support.

This is assuming you are in standard pc mode already.

I've ben trying for months to get it to shut down and gave up. What makes it worse is that my computer is in the closet and I have to walk around a bunch of keyboards to get to it. I keep it in there because of the incredible amount of noise it makes.
