Hi all
I just put this on Yahoo Questions.
I want to split the signal from a compressor (Joe Meek) stereo, one pair to amp for monitoring, one pair back to PC for recording.
Any tips here? From Music angle - phase, volume, frequency, smearing...???

Q on Yahoo:
Audio cable splitter 1 > 2 leads, to take output from one unit to 2 different units (compressor > amp; and >computer). Are there any signal quality issues in splitting the signal? Can I just solder up a lead to do the splitting? All sockets on units are 1/4 inch, hi spec stereo audio gear (music not hi fi). Thanks

Replies so far say
1/ don't solder, use a gold plated splitter cable.
2/ Don't do it, lose volume too much.
And...
I had a look at Studiospares, they have this
ART SPLITCOM MIC SPLITTER/COMBINER (1-2)
so I think 2 of those would do the trick. There is a more expensive Alice distributiuon amp.
Audio cable splitter 1 > 2 leads
Don't bother with whoever gave you advice number 1.
Advice number 2 is correct. You can't simply split the cable and send them to both devices because of differing input impedances would load the signal down differently.
You could do a passive splitter and use 1k resistors (once again you would still get attenuation but it would work much better). But if you can get a small mixer (with aux outs) or the ART unit that would be the best way.

Stuart.
I have the Behringer ADAT Pro-8 unit on my adat A output, I could use this to monitor, as I use the P2 input to record the output from the P2 via the analogue gear.
But that means I only ever hear the music through the Behringer ADAT converters.
And presumably if I put a mini mixer (I have an old Mackie), or the ART splitcom, in order to do the split, everything is then at that quality, as I am recording back into the P2 card.
Or I could add a Luna card and use that as extra outputs.
But I why I fancy a splitter that is completely transparent... does anyone have a circuit diagram etc for such a simple thing?
