No, they weren't added to spice up the song. I'm dying here--does anyone recognize these sounds? Are these symptomatic of something that I'm doing wrong? PCI bus noise?
Please Help!!!
Oh, wait a minute...I just bounced the song in Logic, and now I can't hear (most) of the crackles...what in the hell is going on?
The crackles sound like it sounds when you get an ASIO blowout, plain and simple...it's just that it seems to keep on going...
Here's that f--'d up snippet...

the only cracks i hear, are from my wood fire i just started.
mysterious crackles... mine seemed to have gone after unpluggin' the fridge. but now they have come back (fridge still unplugged, i'm becoming a freak
). strange fact is: i only hear the cracks WHILE recording, not during auditioning, nor during playback of recorded tracks
anyone any ideas
(pulsar2, cubase 5.1r1)

good one :-] i thought at first 'hey nice a song w crackles' so i didn't get it.
think you got a proble w your mediaplayer rather than w DAW. I suppose you did hear crackles making it. Your sequencer does fine though. Do you use internal (like VSTi) instruments) or did you use external synths or dsp stuff for recording. Ie. did you just 'internally in sequencer'-mixdown or did you record everything into your sequencer from dsp source/driver?
atomic.
edit: yer right Sub, there's one click there!

Well first time through, I didn't notice any clicks, thought they would be easier to spot. Then after a few careful listens I found one at around the 8sec mark. I think it could be a disk related problem like wrong IDE driver, but more likely it kind of sounds like the sample you're using has an abrubt transient at the end (which could be fixed with a very slightly quicker release time, or crossfade the end of the sample in Soundforge), perhaps it's an audio track in logic, and you've cut it leaving a transient? In that case a short fadeout on that track would remove it. Not sure... when you play this on your system how many VSTs are you using and "where" do the clicks occur?
Forgot to add - we must get this sorted - I like the atmosphere of this track and want to hear the full version!

Hey guys...
Thanks for all of the input...you know, I'd forgotten to check the posts in this section of the forum--I've been watching over my post in the "Problem Solving" section, so I'm sorry for getting back so late...
It seems really strange to me that the problems that I'm hearing in Logic didn't come through when I bounced the track...as a matter of fact, when I bounced it and listened to in in Windows Media Player, I barely heard any kind of errors at all (except for the one pop at 8 secs.).
I tried to "repair" my Logic installation (using the option in the "Add/Remove" programs window). It still hasn't worked...
I was wondering if it might somehow have something to do the ASIO drivers, since that's something that Logic definitely does not have in common with Windows Media Player...(?)
If you look at my post in the "Problem Solving" section, you'll see that I noticed the problem after I'd set WinAmp as my default player for <most> media types. That isn't to say that that's when the problem began...that's just when I realized that Logic was no longer happy.
Of course, when I get the song finished, you will all be among the first to hear it. I intend for it to be one of the first releases for a record label that I'm planning on starting by the end of the year.
That is, if I can ever get my computer to run properly...
Thanks, all...

Here's what I'm using--about 28 tracks (that's the most that I can get...I feel that I'm going to need at least 50 to finish the track properly...but that's the can of worms that started this mess...). I've got about 12 plug-ins running, and they're not all reverbs, either...and I have no modulation set up. The crackles appear randomly throughout, and they sound like...they're about as loud as the pulsar card when you close the project window and it goes to the background project...or when you turn off your computer and you hear the card disconnect. Only that it's more chaotic.
I think that I'm going to re-install the Pulsar software tonight...
Thanks...

Atomic, thanks for listening...
At that point in the song, there are no VST instruments...I rarely use them...
I've got a Korg Triton (my baby), and I mostly use Pulsar synths for their edge. I'm digging on the Halion, though...I love to use obscure samples....
All of the tracks that you heard were all audio tracks--nothing live. As far as transients go, I'm serial-killer meticulous about watching to make sure that my loops are clean...I've got a good technique that I'll post up in the "Tips and Tricks" section at some point...
Thanks all....

Okay I am going to take my first shot here:
1. Sounds like it could be your IDE drivers and/or DMA disabled. You have i815 right? http://support.intel.com/support/mother ... ffirst.htm
2. CPU power - you might open up a CPU Monitor (the one in Logic or the Microsoft one in your Start/Programs/Accessories), and see if your CPU is spiking. This CPU spiking could be related to other parts of your system, as I've had over 40 tracks playing on a 700mhz/i815 system without problems.
3. ULLI. A too low ULLI for the way your machine is setup.
I would first start with a backup of your cset.ini file and your default/background projects. Then reapply the latest Logic, followed by reapply Pulsar OS over top your current install. This should fix any problems related to Pulsar/Logic. Double check your Logic settings - are you using 24bit? If so then you will need to use the 24bit ASIO modules in your Pulsar project. You might just start with basic ASIO2, 16 bit, and get that working at 44.1khz first.
Finally, the crackles could be related to not having a steady master clock. Is Pulsar master or are you slaving to some external digital piece of equipment? Check the Pulsar samplerate settings, be sure the clock isnt flashing or blinking and that it is solid, all Digital I/Os lit and staying lit.

I just played my song, and I was able to get to a crescendo where 24 tracks play simultaneously before the ASIO blew out again...but strangely enough, there was no crackling sound this time...I've already re-installed Pulsar and Logic, but yesterday when I played my song, it was still crackling away...strange...
Well, I went and downloaded all of the drivers from the website that you provided (thank you very much, by the way)...and I read that there is a recommended sequence that they should be install in. This, combined with the fact that I didn't put my computer in "standard computer" mode when I first installed XP, is pushing me in the direction of re-installing my OS, properly loading all of the drivers, then re-loading all of the audio files.
I know that there's some logic to this, and I know that you're the people to talk to. But I think that I'm going to opt for the quickest (and most complete) solution--completely reinstalling everything, and doing it right the <second> time.
I'll try to install a copy of XP over the existing copy first...if all else fails, I'll just re-format my hard drives and start completely from scratch. While the loss of my porn stockpile will be a tremendous setback, I knew that this day would have to come...
