A Stone Worth Two

Post by kensuguro »

Yess, finally got some time to write some music on memorial day. A neat little house tune that's funk/jazz and very chilled out.

I've been having trouble figuring out a way to do a instrumental without capturing attention with voice samples, but not really ripping the keys with a solo. (without it sounding fusion-ish) This one I tried doing some simple and strange synth lines that are sort of "there" to stand in for a melody, but doesn't scream out like a solo. The waw-clav is a bit more solo-ish, but still holding back to minimal, simple phrases. Anyway, keyword is "passive foreground". The melody is in the foreground, but still pretty ambient.

Notice how the groove is re-interpreted over and over by the bass and keys as the song progresses. Second half I was wondering if I should make brand new melodies for sake of variation, but decided to keep it the same for continuity.

Anyway, great tune to chill out your memorial day hangovers. :-)

nice mix. a bit too heavy on bass on my monitors.
Really nice tune only the solo sometimes gets too far and/or too long off the harmonic basis. Sorry cant describe it differntly with my ppor english
All in all pro level nonetheless - might find itself on the next cafe del mar...

I see what you mean with the solo. Tried to give it a "strange" twist, like it's falling off the harmonic space, sort of jittering around the fringe. It's very borderline.

I'm surprised it came out bass heavy.. The kicks are quite prominent in the mix, but I thought the bass came from bad acoustics in my room. Anyway, thanks for listen. Anyone else notice too much bass? (or muddy bass?)
