I came to Holophonie via a stereo mic lesson at school and find it very interesting.

Does anybody have experiences or knowledge of this way of micing?

The mic should look similar to an ostrich egg and should have eight mics in it, that´s all what i ´ve heard so far.

One of the first things I found in the net is here, not my language though.

Chris, you must learn how to do this and tell us all.

It does have a tendency to sound like things are coming from behind tho.

reading on the following pages I've discovered that it is an italian invention made by Umberto Maggi (bass player of the famous - at least in Italy - band called "Nomadi" ).
The design goes back in the 1983 and was futher developed in the following years. The first experiment was made with the Pink Floyd in the album "Final Cut"

Thanks Lima,
I had a small talk with my lecturer for mics and we decided that I make the holophone (R) to my final year project.
I can imagine this thing sits midst of an orchestra, for example.

We try to get one egg for this time, so we can make our own recordings, for my project and only for my project of course

Some interesting things meanwhile, the mics are Bruel-Kjaer 4060 electret condensers, 20Hz-20kHz. One costs around 315 euro and one of them sits inside the egg to record the lows from 20 - aprox.100Hz only.

If you don´t know yet, also have a look at the Soundfield mk 5 mic, special the hardware controller and what you can do with it, weird.

Mmmm, strange point for the listener, all the volume-distances relations would be distorted that way....I'd put it in the ideal position of a listener in a central-forward seat, the "surround take" would give enormous depth.

I got one of the holophon h2pro 7.1 mics today and can have it for a week.
Yeah, I am off for recordings....

Report will follow, it is planed to produce a DVD with some interesting field recordings. I am excited.

I have been searching around this recently myself.

BTW, I like K2 much better now than whem I first got it.

BTW guys this can be done live. Small venues always sound the best to me instead of those giant mono arrays.

I have tried 5.1 where I have a sub, the center is the rotary, and 4 x Barbettas. The synths sound heavenly when the LFO's toss the signals in the FB5.

I am still messing w/ these tricks , and the 2 x 6 Simulator from DAS. Anyone tried this yet? It takes a stereo signal and decodes it ( my guess ) to 5.1 or 6 channesl of audio. An automatic crossover of sorts.

A few weeks ago, the contempory music ensemble I ocasionally work for were playing at the concert hall in bruges. I was supposed to do a multitrack recording of the event with a bunch of DPA's and a feed from the board.

During rehearsals the in house sound tech took me all the way up and back the building to a little room where they had a top notch ProTools system and also the Soundfield processor... It was amazing! This ensemble use classical instruments in combination with electronics in a surround setup. musicians were also placed off stage. The sense of space you get with 'just' one capsule is stunning. And with the processor, it seemed you could create any space you desired.
There's a price of course, but if you want a compact pro quality recording setup for ensembles and orchestra or surround recordings, this is the biz...

I have time to finish my final year work ,I will link it then.

Meanwhile I can say that in the last days and lots of recordings didn´t gave me the room impression of the matches example up this topic, they must have done some post processing.

Tomorrow I am out for some field recordings, airport, Munich Center, trains etc.

As recording setup I use a mac book with Logic and a Alesis I/O 26 Firewire Interface, a great combination, it works flawless in even 96000 Hz and gets its power from the Mac Book.

I hope I can cover up the secret.

Borg: I have to work on a ProTools HD System with a D-Control/ICON "remote control" at the moment, it is nice to work on it, indeed. On the Soundfield, I know a system called Soundfield MK5 with that expander to mix the signal through the room post recording or whenever. But it has in fact three capsules in it, build together to a pyramid, very interesting system too.
