See, personally I don't like monitoring directly off the card.

You don't do your mixing in Scope though do you? Surely direct off the card is the purest monitor signal for anyone mixing in Scope?

There was a time when I did mix in scope, and at the very least I always appreciated an external volume control giving ability to mute the signal to protect the monitors. Also I used to actually attenuate the monitoring signal both in scope and on the small outboard mixer I was using for monitoring & recording a few instruments. That is until someone pointed out the rather obvious fact that in the digital realm gain changes are essentially bit reducing the signal. After that I would run the full signal out to the analog outputs, then attentuate only on the mixer's monitor section. I pay more attention to proper gain-staging these days, both for mixing & monitoring.

That was a 1202vlz, which I find very colored and similar to the Big Knob in sound (although mine is older and thus at least US manufactured). I use a Soundtracs board now, and I wouldn't say the monitoring section is on the level of that UAD I posted or some of the nice passive monitor control units on the market (which are pricey.) But the board I have no seems to be fairly reliable for my purposes and finally allowed me to overcome the limitations of a small format mixer when it comes to tracking & mixing.

However it's overkill for recording "two, maybe 4 mics" and monitoring.

If I were in ken's shoes I'd pick a budget/pricerange then work from there...
