noise cancelling headphones

no, not for mixing but to use in my work environment. I'm looking for a good set of noise cancelling headphones to up my concentration as I'm too sensitive to the surrounding noise. Any recommends?

I know bose makes one, and although I'm sure it's really nice and all, I'm not prepared to slap down $350 for earphones I probably won't even use to check my mixes with.

I don't know if those are recomended for studio work. I don't know how the noise cancelation is achieved in them but I imagine the end result is probably stripped of high frequency part.
Look into closed cup circumaural headphones, they should attenuate external sounds a certain amount.

oh, right, by "work" I meant work, as in programming in an office type work environment. That's my day job now, as I regain my posture to continue my music where I left off prior to Miami.

No, I probably wouldn't use the noise canceling to do any serious audio.

In the end tho, I did give up the idea of a full ear noise cancelling headphone since they were pretty expensive. (the Bose ones, anyway) I went with Etymotic er4S, which are in ear and supposedly fairly decent for the tiny little things they are.

I already went through a pair of shure e2c's, and those were pretty amazing. The driver on the right side went a little numb (just a click of treble missing) after not using it for several months. I actually even did some audio work on the e2c. I sucked, but I was surprised it was even possible with in ear phones.

Hey Ken, these are a standard in aviation - for crew, and also becoming more common for passengers. We do call them headsets, not headphones in the industry...

Active Noise Reduction, or ANR in short, actually puts an insert between the plug and the phones which measures surround sounds, and mixes them inverted with the actual sound coming from the plug. This makes excellent surround noise reduction

Just for geekness, our ANR headsets also include a dynamics controlled noise gate that mutes in between louder transients, it kinda knows when the (co-)pilot starts talking then it opens the threshold. That combined with the surround noise cancelling makes wearing headsets really confortable. When I fly (usually in the cockpit, there's cargo in the rear), I like to put on the phones just to silence the plane's noise - makes better sleeping

The phones model we use doesn't make much sense for listening to music, since their freq. range is aimed at voice, but I think you get the principle and what's available on the market for ANR...
