lemmings and sheep refers to mass action. nuclear proliferation and MAD are oneupmanship actions of a very few "leaders".

in some late stone age/early iron age societies there are/were kings. if the kings failed their responsibility of leadership they were quickly and ritually murdered and replaced.....

the only lemming behavior here is allowing the current leadership to continue at all. of course change is hard when so many are comfortable or distracted, but these guys are doing such a bad job, it's bound to get uncomfortable soon enough...

these folks can't be voted out of power. eventually, if the pressure gets strong enough, the corrupt will leave power for their own safety, just like in some of those simpler cultures where, if one wished to be evil, it was much safer to be evil OUT of positions of power.
