Hey, why dont creamware design a scope dsp based soundcard capable of connecting to the latest "dual core" laptops....a bit like the latest powercore...or preferably, design a firewire interface enclosure so I can plug in 3 scope cards, what an awsome sound card that would be and it would eliminate the PCI redundency problem.
did find one PCMCIA PCI device on the net but its very expensive (from £1700...)
Firewire scope soundcard
zas,
Don't be discouraged. I said lot's of stuff last summer when I joined the Z that got similr results. No opinions are suppressed here. The simple fact that your mind is curious, is what counts. Most of these guys are very versed with this platform, so ask away. They might snicker a little, but are very, very helpful, right guys?

Probably there should be some topics that could be sticked to the forum....
New users could get overwhelmed by the response of the oldtimers, who have heard it, lets say, more than twice.

But.... an external box with it's own memory, transfering only audiochannels and parameterdata to/from could be a much more of reality.
Then the external box could be universal -it would work on any system.
Oh, well .... dreaming is not forbidden

eh, you're right,
I am a luna(t)ech!

Thats right brotha'man'jea,
I hope CW does the usual inclusive things like us never having to get rid of our cards due to obseletion. Thats the main reason I bought into CW. I saw that the Pulsar I guys never had to buy anything extra to keep their rigs running.
We might even be able to multitask with rackmounted DSP's. I dream of having so much horsepower that I can load and audition sounds while other DSP's are playing. Like my old Emu samplers did. But I'll just settle for racks of DAW's until then. That new gig has a great christmas bonus based on percentage of bar/vrs. the door, whichever is greater. Let's hope these X heads spend some cash instead of doing aerobics all night.

looking at the archive, I found a similar posting, I apologise in that respect. The fact that I spent a good £1000.00 on a sound card and software means if I dont use the card soon in my setup, I will have no choice but to sell it a serious loss and my wife and children will kill me and never forgive me...I would probably loose my job and horrible things will happen....karma....Realistically, I have one option to build a simple 1U PC case, strip down an old P2 laptop and docking station I have kicking around and re assemble it hoping it works....I'm quite handy with a screwdriver and work in IT....wish me luck...

... handy with a srewdriver, so ...
how about (given it's a mobile 'live' solution)
4 units SKB case with handle
bottom 3 units one of those super-cheapo DIY 19" boxes - use just front and base
drill holes according to mobo (P3/P4)
top unit - now this becomes expensive...
industrial 19" drawer with keyboard and TFT
(just steal the idea, as an IT worker you know what it's about)
the back of the PC-base is (of course) distant from the back of the rack case, so you'll need something to fix the plugged cards in place.
Preferable one would mount a patchbay on the back rails of the rack box, to which the IOs of the Scope cards are directly connected.
so you'll put your piece of luggage on a mixerstand, connect what's required from the backplane, pull the drawer and your TFT and keyboard are 'ready to scope'
Full power and not a whimpy notebook.
you'll notice that there are quite some gaps in the scetch above, most result from the fact that IT gear is typically much deeper than music stuff
they 'need' the 1-unit 19" front to make it look small and cute, as it suggests 'elegant and easy'... a nice contrapoint to everyday's reality
Heat problems solved by redundant turbo fans, powerful enough to move the thing if put on wheels - not to mention that what's spared in height is stretched to the back almost up to the horizon
I've recently had such an (empty) SKB thing in my hands in a shop - that's what the insiration is from.
There are other ways possible (say the 'rockbag' kind of things) and all suffer (unfortunately) from the afforemention mechanical problem.
But imho they beat any notebook based solutions and even DO look better, too (if done with proper parts), but that may be up to personal taste
cheers, Tom

well, I forgot the most obvious solution... and missed the time when such abox was sold on ebay today for just 70 Euro, oops
it was an 'industrial PC' with an Asus P2P BX board inside.
The P2/400 could easily be replaced by a Slot1/socket 370 adapter for Celerons or P3 - dunno to which clockrate this board operates but 600MHZ to 1G aren't unlikely.
this basically looks like a Shuttle in plastic, where the keyboard protects the TFT while one is moving the box around.
Any (mini)ATX board should fit inside - and afaik those boxes are still made even with current mobos.
brandnew they are not exactly cheap (the TFT being the main factor for the price), but probably less than a Magma anyway - and much more compact.
cheers, tom

Rack it w/ SKB. I have several of these cases and those dogs will hunt. No better protection, and also a good source of excercise to say the least. Ebay has several good, cheap solutions, but make sure they aren't 4 EATX mobos, as they will not fit with the lids. 21" 4U is ideal for the shock mounted SKB's. If you are really a sado masachist go 4 the industrial. I have a fellow performer here in Las Vegas who bought one 4 he uses a Dual Xeon/Tyan combo from the last century, and it's depth was only good 4 the industrial case. The poor guy struggles nightly with it as he is built like a bone rack. But the shock cases that are 4 the 21" atx's are much, much easier 4 mobile use.
Check out Chassis Plans C3 4U ATX series. Custom logo and paint. I saw the Carillon Rackmount demo there.

Jimmy, the 'industrial PC' I mentioned was about the size of a Shuttle with a handle.
It's (tiltable) TFT is protected by the keyboard when the thing is carried around - like the famous Compaq portables with the orange Plasma display.
Usual application is technical measurement with regular PCI cards - these boxes can certainly house full sized cards.
But I fully second your opinion about SKB - great stuff.
cheers, tom
