But CPU is limited. By using the PCI bus it frees up the CPU. You could free up the CPU by converting disk streaming tracks to audio tracks but this would eliminate midi and thus the ability to edit would be greatly reduced. The only reason I don't use my STS series samplers is the tedium of the GUI.
Enveloping and mixing of layers is fairly cpu light so for disk streaming sample playback the cpu isn't stressed much more than it would be by having to shuttle to the PCI bus. Try it and I'll bet you'll find your polyphony with even non-diskstreaming samplers is dramatically higher than the STS series, for a surprisingly light cpu hit until you start adding on filtering and effects.
Again when I say 'it uses cpu' I don't mean intensive cpu load, I simply mean that pretty much any task that is more than funnelling data to & from DMA device will use the cpu. And even DMA devices (like harddrives and your Scope card) are taking cpu TIME while their IRQ is being serviced. This means that if the cpu needs something and it has to wait a few hundred cycles you're essentially 'losing' cpu power to the time wasted until that IRQ is free.

This thread is what makes this forum unique,IMHO. I only meant to say how positive it is by starting with the developers, and platform we love, and how their business approach is specialised. Then as true addicts of sound, our focus diverts back to what these developers have created 4 us.
I agree with Valis. This is why Giastudio w/ Scope is very stable 4 live players. My CPU is barely used, thus a stripped down O.S. with these two applications is truly a breeze live. I only use GS3 Orchestra 4 it's massive polyphony. It has a nice convolution program, but I find that Giga, when used as a sample playback device at 24bit, through ULLI and DSP cards is why I don't need all of the analog gear I used to carry.
I could easily run this set-up with a P4 2.4GHz Northwood CPU, and still would have the same results. However, when this app. is used with the 10,000rpm enterprise type of HDD's, the polyphony is increased even more, as the HDD's get a good workout streamong the audio. Western Digital Raptor X's is my new weapon of choice, as they can hold 3 x as much audio as the WD360G's. The 16MB cache seems to help in this area, as does the low access times. It is a fast, stable rig.
