RME fireface 800 has sound static when using firewire 800

this is a question from my friend, but anyway, he's got a problem with the fireface 800 working okay on a firewire 400 port, but has some sort of static (like when cubase crashes) on firewire 800.

here's his setup: (he just got it)
i945g chipset
dualcore 3.2ghz
2gm 4300 DDR2
I doubt he's got any other cards other than the firewire card.

Any help appreciated. I really have no idea what's up, and he's in Tokyo.. I'm in Miami!

IRQ sharing? Poor PSU grounding to that firewire connector? Bad firewire cable (this is a possibility due to the increased bandwidth usage)?
