Logic 5 Install Question

Hello,

Sorry if asking a Logic 5 (for PC) is not relevant here, but I thought I'd give it a try just in case I get some responses.
I have done a reformat of my PC and so I am now in the process of reinstalling all my software again.

I can't remember what the best option is when installing Logic 5.5.1. I get a window about File Cache Settings and I have 4 boxes:
48-64 MB RAM, 64-256 MB RAM, 256 and More MB RAM and NO CHANGE.

Now my PC has 1 GB of RAM so I guess the obvious answer is I tick the 256 and More box. But what happens if I tick the No Change Box? So what is the best one to choose: 256 and More MB RAM or NO CHANGE ??

I also get another thing I have to Tick concerning DXMedia Runtime Installation. It says it is not necessary to install for Windows 2000. I run XP PRO SP 2, so do I install the DX Media thing or not?

i don't remember the memory thing, but i'd tick the 256 or more button...as to dx runtime, i would NOT run that. you should already have a newer version running. an older version might be disaster for any newer apps or the vid card....

Thanks for your very quick response GaryB !! Most impressive and very much appreciated !! But what would happen if I chose to tick the NO CHANGE box? Or am I really better off with the 256 or More RAM?

Once again, sorry for the banal question but I would really like to know. I mean, what is that File Cache settings thing all about anyway?

pre-allocation of memory for the app. the cache needed to do realtime audio(more or less) requires memory either on disc or on chip, the setting would seem to be for optimization of the use of both, as i understand it. just my opinion, but i would think realtime manipulation would be easier if you read from chip memory instead of the hd. i think "no change" might be just fine, though. try it if you want.

i really don't remember which i chose or if i even had the choice. that install was a over a year ago and i haven't needed to change it...what does the manual say?

Hi again GaryB,

The manual doesn't really say anything about it that sheds any light on my question.
Out of curiosity do you stick with ASIO drivers in Scope or have you tried using the EASI ones? If so, is there any significant difference?

I think that option is only required for Win98. You don't say what you're using. Best thing is to use XP... Logic runs great under it. Make sure it's at a higher priority than Scope. And forget EASI - use ASIO or ASIO2 (not the 32bit float versions).

I think the Installer is simply changing options that you would change in the "Audio Driver 2" panel in preferences, under the ASIO driver (since that's what you would be using). Simply refer to the sections of the manual that discuss those settings. Most likely it is adjusting the size of one or more of the buffer settings there.

I did write in my first post on this thread that I use XP Pro SP2.

However, what do you mean by, "Make sure it's at a higher priority than Scope?"

Valis - I believe it's a registry tweak for Win98.

Atomic Marshmallow - sorry I missed the OS spec. Priority is to do with multitasking in XP - it's done in the task manager. You can also set priority in a shortcut for when you start an app. There have been lots of threads about this here - do a search.

Also make sure that the drive you use for recording audio is formatted with NTFS.

That's entirely possible too, I have no experience with Win9x (for MS OS's I've used NT since 3.51).
