took me some time to get your tracks to the Scope machine (which isn't networked anymore)...
this is strange - with AC97 onboard audio (Gigabyte) the mp3s did sound rather boring, imho.
Since you've invested so much in it, I felt a bit sad for you.

But played through SFP (I use TripleDat for that) everything found it's place and it was a balanced, well sounding production.

But I really didn't expect THIS difference, makes me kind of clueless - don't they care for inferior (consumer) playback gear in such a facility ?
Or are the mp3s pre-mastered versions ?

At least they have significat headroom left - and I hardly dare to mention that (in my humble ears) the 'standard 3db extra' from the SonicTimeworks MasterComp gave them a pleasing bit more presence.

I mean I didn't tweak a thing, I just set the level and it was right - is that STW tool that good ?
If you like I can mail you a short excerpt to compare.

Since it's more of a 'listen and enjoy' type of record it will most likely find it's way to 'better' fidelity players anyway.

Btw I liked your voice much more in french (though I admit those were hard schooldays with that language...)
is it Gigapiano on 'Something that Shines' ?

congrats for a well done production, Tom

Hi all! I'm happy to announce my first "official" release, an album with 10 titles, entirely mixed in scope, also using scope synths.

I composed, arranged, recorded and mixed the whole thing, mastering was done in a pro facility here in Montreal. I've had a lot of help along my creative journey, especially from musicians who accepted to play on the album without being paid.

There are 7 songs (6 in french, 1 in english) and 3 instrumental tracks on the CD. 3 tracks available for download here:

http://elieonline.net/musique.html

Click on "mp3" below the songs 2, 6 and 7. I'll be improving the site too, soon.

I'm currently waiting for my factory-pressed CDs, (I'll be making the packaging for the first batch myself). This is exciting. I'm already working on my second release, which is well under way, and will be in english.

I've learned so much making this album, it took me more than a year in full time reclusion to produce it, and this is the second version of the album. I also learned to appreciate even more my beloved CW system, which worked flawlessly during the whole process. Thanks CW! Thanks to the PZ community too, for the good support and friendship I've always found here! You guys rock!

Here's my home page: http://www.elieonline.net

Don't forget to sign my guestbook (even if it's in english)!

Thanks Astroman, for your constructive feed-back and for taking the time to listen to my work.

Onboard audio often lacks depth and punch... I remember on my first setup, I installed a soundblaster live (the cheapest one) while waiting for my cw board. When my luna arrived I couldn't believe my ears, the soundblaster sounded so lifeless and dull beside the cw card...

The album wasn't mastered like a "normal" release, we decided to use very light compression to preserve the natural dynamic movements that are present in my work. We didn't want to squash the mix at all, hence the headroom. Could it benefit from a little more compression? Possibly, I'm open to the idea... In fact, this is a first production, made with fairly limited resources, and with the skills that I'm developing (I'm a self-taught "studio rat", being a instrumentalist and composer first...) I've learned production out of necessity, I really love putting my stuff together.

The piano was a real one, but it is imo the weakest sounding miked instrument of the album... I used the gear that was on site and it's a first experience at miking a grand piano.

The mp3s are post mastering.

Next album is coming well too! Should be done in the course of the year! I think the experience gained while doing the first will show in the second!

exactly - I once had the same SB - but that model had a hardware phase bug on the front channels (as it turned out later)

which I would never have expected
imho the well balanced mix is the main reason that it responds so well to a slight push from the STW MasterComp.
I found it remarkable (regarding the great and expensive gear you mentioned) that the Scope plugin was an equal player.

probably because you (still) remember it's natural sound
anyway - a good start, so just keep it up

What do you mean by that?

this type of processor has a general tendency of adding a certain degree of harshness to the signal.
You'll notice that in the files I'm about to send you.
Even though the effective level modification is just 1.8 dB, the 'physical' appearance of your voice becomes more direct and adressing imho.

The effect may not always be appreciated, but you're (most likely) focussed on the songs content and avoid fx gimmicks - so this may improve the awareness of the listener - or not, eventually it's a matter of taste
There's enough 'sweetness' in the sounds to compensate the more or less inevitable side effect.

anyway, I've had (to have) a closer listening and I must admit it is VERY well produced.
It gained while listening, instead of falling into boredom after the 3rd run

I agree on the piano record - but imho the songs gains a lot of honesty from it's flaws - the other way round would be too much icing on the cake.

cheers, Tom
