Hello People!

Actually I am just down right sad. The P.T.C.C D.A.W. is now officially dead!

Obviously I am going to replace my burnt-out system with a new one.
Though this is a very good thing to do, I am in a quite bit of a snag really.
You see, I only have about 3500 SEK!
That’s about well: 443U$D or 255GBP or 373Euros.
This is not much I know! Definitely not enough for what I had in mind.
But this will have to do.
So again I am here stretching my arms out for your help, thoughts, expertise if you will.
What I need is a MOTHERBOARD, CPU, and RAM.

What I have left from the old set up is:
1. Networks card 10/100mbit PCI Cnet
1. GECUBE RADEON 9250 128MB TV-OUT DVI AGP8X GC-R9250L-C3H
2. Maxtor 120Gb discs at ATA100 7200Rpm
1. 550 watts Gold (noname) power supply
1. Pulsar2 board
1. Powersampler (LUNA) board

And 2 Winbond DDram PC2700 333Mhz sticks, which are old and tired.
So I would really like new ones. Or maybe be able to incorporate these with the new set up.
This is not a priority.

I need brand new and cheap stuff that’ll work with my CreamWare boards.
This is first priority.
I have been running on an Intel Celeron CPU at 1700Mhz for some time now and if the new CPU is a Celeron, I wouldn’t mind. These are cheaper and in my experience quite stable.
Of course no motherboard with a VIA chipset will do!! EVER!!!
My old motherboard was a MSI I845E MAX. I tell you this. I’ve had to do a lot of
tweaking to get this system stable.
I had a lot of problems with crashes while using USB. Well I got it to work fairly well.
But there a still a few glitches.

I’ve been looking on the web at different motherboards and I am getting worried about how
tiny all of the new ones are. And there seems to be quite few regular PCI busses left.
They’re getting taken over by the Express PCI busses.
I had big trouble fitting my CreamWare boards on the motherboard I have know.
The cards would not fit due to the fact that there where audio ports and other stuff in the way.
So lucky me that I had 6 PCI slots to choose from. These newer boards have about 3.
It worries me. That’s why I want your help. Some of you guys have already had time to test this new stuff out. So your thoughts and findings will be very helpful to my crew and me.

I have about one and a half month to decide what to get so slam me with your recommendations!
In the mean time I’ll be working with FL Studio 5, on an old (quite stable) P2 450 Mhz computer with 64Mb of memory. Sounds like fun fun fun!

Regards Jngaelin

My P4T-E just died and I'm looking at the D865PERL - thanks Gary - but I notice on ZipZoomFly there are 3 versions and I think they are out of stock on the one I want...the retail PERL-L ready for EE CPU, as opposed to a non-retail version of the L (?) and a K version, which has Gigabit Lan and is more expensive.
Can someone shed some light please? Is the K version the newest and most desirable?

this is where i've gotten 'em lately:
http://www.compuvest.com/Description.jsp?iid=56925

afaik, all the latest versions are prescott ready(pe chipset, latest bios), although i prefer northwoods when i can get them. the northwood is very fast, not as fast as ee or prescott on paper, but about as good in the real world, and much cooler. the perlk version is gigabyte lan, while the perll is standard lan. i can't see any reason to get the gigabyte lan as high speed internet is not a priority for a daw, but if you need it, fine. actually, zip zoom fly has the perll for $25 less than compuvest and says they're in stock(they haven't had them when i'd checked earlier):
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... ode=240991 i'd go here for it....

Just ordered the K version from ZipZoomFly and the Corsair ram Gary recommended. I like the idea of matched ram. I'll use my 1.8 Northwood from the dead P4T-E...pennies are tight at present. Since my system died and I will be replacing the mb, as I recall the correct procedure is to make sure everything works with NO hd connected, then connect the drives, boot into safe mode, remove all devices in device manager, reboot and let XP re-detect - right?

sounds good.
i would consider a fresh install of everything after a repartition and reformat(after backing up all personal files).

Well, sorta, because not all devices will be redetected this way... Better is to get into safe mode, run regedit, and completeley remove the key HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Enum
(including all subs). You will have to adjust permissions of this key first (Edit/Permissions/Everyone -> Full Control) to be able to delete it.
Before deleting the Enum key, you should run msconfig and prevent the startup-items from loading - this saves numerous error messages of things that want to load and use your (missing) devices.
The Garyb-option (repartition and reinstall) is the safer way to go, tho.

Cheers,
Rob
