Glitching and crackling when recording

I have a problem I've had for some time now with my Luna2 (scope home) card.
When I record stuff, either it is from an external source or by internal routing, the recorded wave contain alot of glitching and crackling. The glitches are written in the file itself so i can actually see the crackling visually in the audiofile. I have reinstalled both the drivers and applications
several times. I have tried every available bitrates and samplerates and ULLI settings.
All playback work just fine, the problem only occur when i record stuff. Unfortunately I cant recall exactly when the problem started to arise, but I think it was around the time i updated to sp2..I simply ignored it because I didnt
need to record anything back then:p

I figure it can be one of the following resons:
a) the soundcard is broken
b) my cheap 360W PSU is too small for my system.
c) there is an IRQ conflict
d) there is a conflict with the mobo Realtek soundchip.
e) there is a software conflict
f) the ram is fooked
g) somehow the driver is unstable with SP2, as I recall the problems started around the time I updated win xp to sp2.

I have tried the luna card in a different PCI slot but nothing changed. I also removed the scsi card without any imrovement.
I've reformated the pc a few times over the last year as well. Defragmentaion is neither an issue, I defrag once a week. Perhaps I should also mention that I dont use midi on the card, since i got a midisport usb interface. All drivers are up to date (exept the 3 year old scope driver

)
Anybody experienced something like this before? Any suggestions are greatly appriciated

My system is:
P4 2.8ghz, 1024mb ram, Luna 2, scsi pci card,
Radeon x800gt. Asus P4P800-e deluxe mobo with Realtek soundcard activated.
Win XP pro Sp2, Cubase SX, soundforge 6, scope 4.0.

Hi,

Check that your disk driver is DMA enabled

I checked the DMA settings and even tho DMA was enabled on both my drives, I reinstalled the disk drivers as microsoft state is the only way to re-enable DMA if windows detect more then 6 crc errors.

I did try to record a movie sample from mediaplayer in soundforge, and that worked fine. While recording the asio output in cubase with soundforge still make the crackles.
Could there be a buffer setting or something in either soundforge or cubase I should try to tweak?

Occasionally I have had this problem and found that somehow the SFP project got corrupted. Try rebuilding from scratch (OUCH) and trying it again.

Sometimes installing a newer graphics card driver will fix these problems or if you change the resolution and refresh rate of the graphics card.

this seem simmilar to the problem i had with Soundforge.
it came to solution when i switched from the standard soundmapper to ASIO.

Thanks for your replies!

I builded my scope project up from scratch
(even tho I reinstalled the scope software several times) and it did not help.
Nor did any changes of resolution or refresh rate. I have tried several driver versions for my graphic card, both official ones and unofficial ones.
Soundforge 6 dosent support ASIO so I tried with a 'borrowed' version of SF8. It worked just fine with the asio driver in soundforge 8! Thats good

But now I have to turn on 'release asio driver in background' in cubase, witch I dont like

Because I like to have my cubase project running while I browse samples in SF, or when I record samples from movies etc in SF.
This way of recording stuff in SF and later import it to cubase may sound like 'the hard way' of doing it, but I really prefer the sample editing in SF;) Same goes when I have a musician here..I use to record like 10 tracks in SF while cubase is running. Then I
cut out the good parts, edit them and put it into cubase.
What bothers me is that this used to work just fine...I mean, shouldnt we be able to record through the wave inputs without this much fuzz? Oh well..I guess Im going to buy SF 8 pretty soon. Better then to buy a new audiocard witch i was afraid i had to do:p
But after reading about lots of people having this problem I suspect a driver problem or some conflict with windos xp sp2..

there may indeed be a software problem stemming from the sp2 install, but it's more like a corruption or extra entry in the registry, not an inherent incompatability.

this may just be a resource issue. you may need to set sf's priority to "above normal" and/or set scope to "below normal" or even "low" when you have both apps open to get good performance. my guess is that setting priority on sf will do the trick. cubase is pretty heavy and so is sf when recording.....
