‘Monostril’, the tenth download single from the award-winning electronica label machine.records, is a new track from ODDSKOOL.

Featured on last year’s machine.music 2 compilation, ODDSKOOL (aka Toby Newman) has been locked in the studio since then working on a full-length album release, emerging only to perform a few unforgettable live sets at our TERMINAL night (most recently on October 20th at Cardiff’s legendary Clwb Ifor Bach).

This track is the first we have managed to coax from Toby for public release since then, and it’s more than worth the wait. As with his ‘Diet Hogan’ track, which caught the attention of the late John Peel, the intricate yet expansive sound of ‘Monostril’ results in a totally unique kind of IDM.

‘Monostril’ is available as a free download from December 5th 2005. A full-length ODDSKOOL studio album will be released in 2006.

How have you done the "reverse effect" at about 1:15 and about 2:10?

I'm not sure which sound you mean - can you be more accurate with the times?

Do you mean the sound at 2:13 and 2:22 perhaps?

I mean the global sound, "how the track sounds".

About the times, I was referring to the parts that seems to be played backwards (like you was scretching backwards the disc). They starts at minute 1:08 and at 2:21.

I think I know the part you mean now - although I think you are hearing two different techniques there and thinking that they are the same.

The first is done by internally sampling the mix, loading the sample on to the STS-5000, and extreme-pitch-bending the result.

The second one is my very own extra special technique that I am afraid I am disinclined to share

Makes me think of Oldfield, there's a bit of the same ... purity? ... as in his Taurus 1,2 and I'm not sure how many Taurus's he did.

Bizarre: I've not heard Oldfield's 'Taurus' before. I'll look into getting hold of it so I can compare.

Thanks, Shroomz, I like to make my music such that it is enjoyable even without paying much attention but, if you do sit down and listen carefully, there is enough going on to maintain your attention and interest. Hopefully the line between 'intelligent' and 'enjoyable from a relaxed perspective' is drawn accurately!
