i'm very surprised about the "ultimate midi controller" and all the possibiliy it offers (even if it cost very much! 650$ only for the principal box!)
however, i think that everyone can build a midi controller (i build mine, too! - http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_gallery/matteo.jpg and used a shoe box for the main case!)
but people in internet are very skilled, and you can found almost everything... for example, this guy has a project for MIDI LASER HARP.... awesome!

MC-505 has D-Beam, CC# assignable laser that senses distance to the next object. So by moving hand up and down you could basically control anything.
