The use of j9k's A2D and D2A modules

Hi, could anyone gently explain to me how do they work?
I've done a patch connecting the ins to the corresponding outs (every one), and I expected to obtain ,after the D2A, the same audio of the input (connected to the A2D), but the result is very different: a kind of bit crunch.

Where I'm wrong?

there are only 8 bits there and the purpose of it was to be able to rearange the bits or perform some other operation on a few of them.
