scope pro 15dsp and defeater key
Hi Guys,
I've been puzzling over this problem with my 15 DSP booster and my Steinberg VSL2020 for the last couple of days. I'm getting the same kind of result as Tripstation. The plugins will insert and appear on-screen, but no audio is getting to them. It's like they are parallel to the audio signal 'cause they also don't stop the signal coming through. I must say though, it was only after removing the "XTC" section from cset.ini that the plugin would insert and come up. Without doing that I would get the message "XTC Plug not installed properly".
I'll keep playing, but I'm not sure I'm going to sort out the problem. I tried the same thing with someone else's Pulsar 1 the other day and it worked first go.
It seems that cards that have I/O's work better in this mode than cards that don't. I don't know what that says for the "Pulsar XTC".
Incidently Narly, the idea of syncing the XTCProject to the master ASIO card is very clever...respect!
Cheers,
AudioDan

Hi Tripstaion,
I just wanted to ask you (seeing as how your PC-DL Deluxe with 15 DSP booster seems to be working) could you tell me what BIOS version you're using and whether you're using Hyperthreading? (sorry if I've asked you that before)
I've almost given up on XTC mode, but I'd like to think I've given it my best shot.
Have you had any luck with getting the DSP booster to work as just DSP (no I/O) yet?
Cheers,
AudioDan

Hey man,
I am using the latest bios version of the Asus PC-DL motherboard which is 1.8.
If you have 2 cpu's There isn't really any point in using hyperthreading.
Cubase SX doesn't even run properly if you do.
I suspect other apps will be similar.
I have no probs using XTC mode at all.
It runs really well.
If you want I can post my IRQ's etc, but I have no sharing IRQ's.
I have my scope 15DSP in slot 5 (furthest away from the AGP slot.
Tell me about your config, irq's slots etc.
This system definatly works in XTC mode dude.
As I said before I am using mLAN stuff now and can't seem to use the 15DSP cards as DSP only no I/O.
I have also used them in SCOPE mode.
I have had a few crashes with that though.
I think there is a problem with SFP 4 not really being able to cope with 2 cpu's. I also run Nuendo3 (Cubase SX3).
This however does support 2 cpu's and works really well.
I don't think SX likes having another program like SFP running though cause I think it uses one cpu for midi and the other for audio or something similar.
I have sometimes managed to run SFP and Nuenodo3 together, depends on what synths etc are running.
And also it seem ok if you are not editing audio or midi in SX.
So you might get away with it for mixing.
But I had to reboot so many times it became a pain.
So :-
XTC mode SX ASUS PC-DL works well.
SFP mode SX ASUS PC-DL unreliable.
regards,
James

Hi James,
That's so weird 'cause it's exactly the opposite for me. I just updated to the latest BIOS version, but I haven't tried XTC yet. I'm also running Nuendo 3 but I have no troubles with SFP mode. I'm currently running that as the front/back end to Nuendo. I have my 15DSP bosster in the end slot like you. I'm using a Luna in another slot and I've trid it with IRQ sharing and without, but with the same result.
If you get a chance and you get some inspiration, try making a session that maxes your DSP's with something like Vinco or Vocodizer or PsyQ or something and then save it and reload it.
If that works properly for you then I'll consider completely changing my RAM.
Let me know.
Thanks very much for your help.

Hi,
I have put the scope cards back in the PC-DL.
I have mLAN going as well.
Am using XTC mode with I/O.
Using mLAN for the extra I/O and clocking.
Have the Motif using 16 outputs.
Also have two I88X's for more I/O, one of which has the Korg Triton rack connected to the ADAT input.
Will give my more detail of my config when I have a bit more time.
regards,
James

Hi James,
I can use my cards in XTC mode as long as I don't exceed about one third DSP capacity. If I do a session that really loads up the cards and then I try to save and reboot it, it crashes as it tries to load in the XTC plugins.
I've tried it with and without IRQ sharing, with and without XTC audio I/O...any different configuration of cset.ini that actually works...EVERYTHING!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!
Ahem...
Am taking delivery of a UAD-1 Ultra Pack and a Project Pack and then later I'll be getting a new motherboard....iWill DH800. That's what Carillon use in their Dual Xeon systems so hopefully it'll work. Also getting it put into a Carillon Core case at the same time....
I might think about trying XTC again then.
Thanks very much for your help.

The STS200 might be ok.
I'll give it a try.
Where do you get VolksZampler from?

Hi,
VolksZampler is actually included in SFP...at least for Luna it was. I've had it since I bought SFP 3.0 for my LunaII. It's one of those plugins that doesn't install properly as an XTC plug unless you do it yourself via the .oxe file. (Of course it is an instrument in your VST host). This is assuming you have the licence for it, and I'm pretty certain you would.
Got my two UAD-1's last night....so far me likie!! Need another one though...not enough grunt.
Cheers,

Hi,
I managed to get the STS2000P loading in XTC mode.
I can load a sample into the first slot but, then I get a "Low memory <path to file>" being displayed in the slot rather than the sample.
Some slots seem ok.
Any work around for this.

James

Hi James,
Just to let you know I bought a new motherboard - the iWill DH800, used in Carillon Audio PC's - and it seems to be a notch above the ASUS PC-DL. More brand name bits like Adaptec RAID, different model of Intel chipset, etc. But when I tested cards the same way I got the same error message.
I loaded up Vinco (and a variety of other plugins during different tests)until the DSP load was just below max, then I saved the session and reloaded it. If the error message doesn't happen during the loading of the plugins it will certainly happen if the session tries to change sample rate.
My last last final resort is to try XP Service Pack 1 instead of 2, but I doubt it will make any difference. I've just about given up.
I was hoping to get the Creamware cards working on the new motherboard, because the compressors with the UAD-1 cards, although they sound lovely, are not what I would call "staples". They're not amazing when it comes to doing things like compressing drums and whats more, there's really no good gate plugin so having those XTC plugins available would have been great. Looks like I might be buying a Powercore FW or two. Ahhhhhh well.
Cheers,
AudioDan

That's a good idea.....you do mean the virtual memory....don't you? I wouldn't have thought of that myself.
I tried installing XP again and putting on SP1a instead of SP2 but got the same thing when the session tried to switch sample rates.
I wanted to ask you, do you use the Scope boards as your master clock or are they slaving to an external sync? I was just getting amazingly stable operation by slaving my XTC session to the ADAT sync of my Fostex D2424. I'll do further tests, but it my be that I have to get the Sync Plate and my problems might be solved.

Hi,
I have disabled virtual memeory altogether in XP.
No the system cache is not the same.
It is a setting in performance options advanced. Just tick System Cache box rather than the Programs.
I always slave to external clock.
I slave to my mLan clock via adat from the O1V96 from its my16 mlan card.

James

I did try loading up to about 95% on both scope cards and and had some UAD and Powercore plugs loaded as well.
I had problems then.
I think it is probably a problem with pci bandwidth.
I wonder if it would be better in a board that has pci-x with more pci busses such as the ASUS pch-dl or ncc-dl.
Of course you can only plug the scopes into the pci 5volt slots.
I have got the scope cards up to about 75% with no probs though.
I guess if you have two cpu's you can't expect to have everything going at the same time.
When I try to load the UAD-1 past about 95% I get probs as well.

James

Hi James,
That's a shame about the UAD cards. I've bought two of them but now that I've got a different motherboard they are in PCI-X slot instead so hopefully there won't be a bandwidth problem.
Was it the "ScopeDriverIOCtl....." error that you got from the Creamware cards? I'll guarantee that if you limit Nuendo's access to just one CPU the problem won't occur. Boring huh?
So anyway, my computer is now re-configured to use the Creamware cards as I/O and a summing mixer and some special ("External") FX such as Vocodizer, Optimaster, PSYQ and Transient Designer. I've basically already started saving for a Powercore Firewire, along with all the other things....
Cheers,
AudioDan
