mmm, reggea..., always good to feel that ridm...empty 1, the beat on 3, still a revolutionary and unique concept
Just imagine this picture: Everybody ready?!!...One...Two...One, Twho, Three, Four and BAAAMMM, everyone diving on that single first One with the energy of an atom bomb
No, doing nothing on that One, that's really Art (or Culture manj!)
Reggea, my old love, with deeper than deepest Burning Spear at the top
Quite a job you've done.
I guess that your recording/mixing time was limited, yet a sound remark
At least on my (unsurpassed) ADAM nearfields there's a small metallic glow on the highs (cymbal, horns, hats, snare).
Maybe it's due to the phaser you might have used, or to the reverb, or even to the always troubling mics crosstalk (what's the right word for it?).
Not that much, but It was my first thought during the opening.
I always like to see the hats and (some) other percussive sounds so superdry in reaggea, as they contrast so beautifull with the space character of a lot of reggea mixes.
To my taste the hats could be a bit dryer, the short delay line you have in the most part of it is nice, but it deminishes the front/back depth.
But I'm not a (reggea) expert, so forgive me when I'm talking bullshit
Did you concider feeding the track to an attack designer?
It could be good for it, to bring the mix even more up front.
The accentuated style is perfect to try it on the mix as a whole
cheers

thanks all!
yes hubird, there's a cheap phaser in there for the moment...also, it's certainly no mix, just a rough demo. thanks for the thoughts anyway! how can i ignore honest criticism, especially when the critic is knowledgeable? reggae is like other forms of music. although there are standards and cliches, there's no specific rulebook and good sound is good sound. i'll take your ideas into consideration when i mix! i thought is was bass heavy(tooo much)....

absolutely not, but I'll check it tomorrow, when I can activate the active ADAM woofer box that I acquired latelyOn 2005-08-24 20:45, garyb wrote:

During years of night working at home I got a good feeling with my hands or ears close to the subbase holes of my nearfields to check the lows

I'll look forward to the real mix

Sounds Interesting!
This reminds me at the old time (1982), when I still played the Guitar in night (dancing)club. We recorded live band with vocals, really fun, but tough to justify sounding, unlike in the studio.
Thanks for sharing this, it makes me want to JAM with friends again soon!
P/S: Which part (Instrument) did you play on this one?
Cheer,
LongStudio
