Hi Garyb,
Thanks for your input. I think for some of us the concepts of SFP 'v' XTC are not as stright forward as others of us take for granted.
The installation of both SFP and XTC is intermittent at the best of times....sometimes synths don't install properly, sometimes plugins don't install properly
and optional plugins almost never install properly without some serious prompting. It takes patience and a lot of ridiculous trial and error to discover what's going on.
I've spent untold hours trying to rectifiy faulty installations of SFP and XTC.

The other thing is that only three people that I've found on this forum have experianced the "ScopeDriverIOctl..." bla bla bla, error.
I'm one of them and there isn't a lot of help for this one, hence some of the other steps.

I think what some people would like is to not have to know about the boring 'I have
to know how to fix a PC before I can actually use it' stage.
Computers are boring, they are just a cheap tool to get the job done,
and muso's don't want to think about the PC. It's hard enough learning the programs
that we put on it. I deal with this every day becaue I work in a music shop and I've
set countless people up with systems and I know that most people don't want to think
about the computer they're using.
Which is unfortunately why most of these peoples' computers break down very quickly,
but the fact still remains).
Anyway, thanks for your link to the MIDI explanation. It cleared up a couple of thinds for me.

Imagine you build a car using main parts from 10 manufacturers for all the different subsystems, and use the one and only
electronic system of MicroCars written for all cars...
Your name should be Gary to get that machine rolling
If your (music) life depends on computer, system software AND hardware should be
put together by the same manufacturer, that's my bid.
That's the main reason I wanne work on mac, but I admit I wanne be stupid
no offend

eh,
said it before and i'll say it again.
sure computers are boring, so what!
you took a dangerous job, now stop complaining that it's dangerous. to quote super chicken(again!): "you knew the job was dangerous when you took it, fred."

the guy who runs a studio is an engineer. scope is a real studio. a computer is an unbelievably complex tool that does some pretty heavy work. just because a program seems simple to operate doesn't mean that the process is simple. to some degree, you must be an engineer, or go to someone else's studio. i have no problem putting together a machine because i did some homework and learned, not because i'm special. i don't especially like being an engineer, but it is a means to an end. i need to be able to use the tools that i purchased, otherwise, i'm just a guy with an expensive toy who deserves what he gets, who when he's not happy can throw a fit and buy something else that he won't understand.

sounds provocative, but it's really just about myself.....

you really don't realize enough how a great feeling you have for the subject-matter (concidering regular posts from you)

The truth comes out when you don't have or want to have understandings more than necessory for running basic processes.

One has to know about Midi, harddisk recording, compressors, enveloppes, etc. etc., like any music engineer, but that's different
from knowing about rather complicated system configurations in a confusing multi brand market, targeting on a generalistic operating system.

I would really like to see Bill Gates marketing an all-in-one solution for audio use  (take it as an experiment of thought).

'Pops and clicks? hey man, you got a clone, eh?'

for the most part though, i stick with middle of the road, first quality parts and there are never any real problems. i stay away from exotic solutions and trying to have the fastest machine, and focus on usability and stability....i also don't try to make the thing do things that it won't do.....most of all, i've paid attention to other's problems and solutions. i had read hundreds of posts before asking questions. in fact, by the time i got done reading 40 or so posts, i had a stable system...

nice how this thread is stretching across the screen for me...

bill gates making an all in one audio machine...

Bill Gates offering an all-in-one audio solution? That's like getting a florist to build that 10 in one car you mentioned...
Bill Gates can't even make an all in one platform upon which to run a word processor that doesn't eat itself alive. Imagine what his solution would do to your audio....

Stick with Mac for "all-in-ones", but if it's Creamware then it's the 10-in-one solution built carefully as Garyb said.

Cheers,

AudioDan
ps. I think if you wrote in another program such as Notepad it doesn't word wrap properly...
