whats really wild is that people actually belieave carpet bombing a pipeline is CHEAPER than digging it.
LOL
if we were talking 'nam, with burning down trees etc. u would atleast have half a point.
but now you are just talking stupid.
sorry, but you're wrong

"Their calendar ends on winter solstice 21 Dec 2012, a day when the sun is positioned exactly in the direction of the center of our galaxy, a very rare event."
Do you mean moving into this center ? Or being in position but moving in a save direction?
mm still don't get how this toppic got from boms in Londen to Mayascience to carpet bombing a pipeline
But it's interesting. Liked that last URL.
Though reading but interesting. Stared for an hour at least now.

It's all explained if you do a google search. On 2005-07-21 03:09, Casper wrote:

Basically on that particular solstice, Venus's cycle brings it closer to earth than it's ever been before & a little too close for comfort. Scientists & theorists are trying to work out the significance of this & the extremely unusual alignment of the other
planets at this more than curious point in time.

The thread was bombed with tangents quite early on & the bombings in Afganistan are probably more relevant to London than the dark ages IMO. I suppose bringing the 2012
issue into the thread is just pure chaos theory

no, not at all - it's just that the galaxy's center, the sun and the earth are perfectly aligned on that day, a thing that only happens every some thousand years. On 2005-07-21 03:09, Casper wrote:

Noone knows how they calculated this prediction, but it's rather unlikely that it's a hit by chance (considering their other astronomic capabilities).
the black hole 'story' was added by me as some contemporary sci-fi irony - too much films - or books possibly

these cross refed discussions are indeed time consuming

the relation to the London bombings (aside from the usual end time scenario) is the image of society (in the widest context) these events provide.
People do consider themselves educated, sophisticated, capable today... watch them on omnipresent TV... and then see an ancient culture predicting an event without any of our current tools. An event as far from them as the building of the pyramids is from us, using a time scale of 5k years - impressive.
If you've read the mythological explanation the complete scenario even makes perfect sense - it's not just the detection of a 'mechanical' process, but also put in a philosophical context.
I don't consider the Mayans 'superior' to us and don't want to romanticise an ancient culture - but there is a point WHAT we do achieve with our technology.
Fiddling with explosives is just a small aspect (nothing particular btw - it was one of my hobbies in schooldays - and I was always amazed WHAT stuff they'd sell to a 17 year boy without even asking...), but it's a symptom.
imho this world isn't even ruled by greed or money - it's reigned by pure stupidity.
religious or oil fanatic - politician or consumer - scientist or priest - everywhere you look you find similiar mental dysfunctions (in large scale perspective).
...but according to books it was said to be not much different in ancient Rome

cheers, Tom
I can't say I'm one of those people who delights in crazy predictions and Nostradamus and all that crap. However those Mayans were a pretty advanced civilization, with a depth of wisdom that our primitive capitalist culture could really learn from. They were also pretty damn amazing cosmologists, no-one can really argue with that. So the 2012 thing certainly makes me think..
Mathematics don't rule the world. They are a way of reading it and sometimes of writing it. A product of our mind that we direct influenced by all the other components, education, fears, desires, needs. On 2005-07-21 06:14, notbobmoog wrote:

Mathematics are at the center of everything & must rule the world we live in BTW.
If this is true, the odds were high that it would happen.

I agree to an extent, but mathemetitions have been calculating & simulating the workings of nature for thousands of years. All related sciences rely centrally on maths. For all i know, we in this universe / dimension are all blindly part of just one beautifull equation.

This place has a fitting name: <a href="http://mathworld.wolfram.com/news/2005- ... thworld</a>
I also prefer Platos's idea, connected with ability and chance to realize. To find THE formula may be possible, but how many contraints will it have? A hell lot of work to find out. And will the result be really a thing anyone can handle, or, do we really want it like that?
Yesterday I've seen a film at ARTE, the guy showed how medieval towns were planned with lines and circles. I believe him, very convincing how he reconstructed Wismar. But I don't want to have like this as a "world plan". It's fun to find out later, that there has been some math with it. But not in advance. Too cold from the feeling, IMHO.

ok, possibly not politically correct - but since the Mathworld link starts with another catastrophy example (tsunami simulation), here's another horror a significant number of 'western' citizens are facing...
just to put concern into context again, it's a non-cosmic event with a definate probability.
the Canary isle of La Palma is a fairly instabile vulcano. The next outbreak is expected to part the mountain into 2 halves along a line of about 20km. One half is supposed to slide a few km down into the Atlantic Ocean - triggering a mega tsunami moving to the american east coast.
It's expected to reach the border with a height no less than 50-150m within 6 hours after the event...
Go figure THAT scenario
After the last tsunami event in Asia this (highly realistic) danger has eventually been mentioned in news, but before there was almost no coverage at all.
I only noticed it once as a sidenote in a TV feature about that isle some 2 years ago.
I mean there a meteorites (a few k tons hit us every day), tsunamis and earthquakes (as a regular geological activity), traffic, unawareness and playing games with one's own health...
LIFE IS DANGEROUS - it always ends deadly
so why bother about a few idiots running mad ?
As has been mentioned - a clear view of what's going on helps to not get drawn into the mind machinery of someone else.
cheers, Tom
btw the quote about life is from a physician
