I've decided to go a bit "retro" (with respect to how I try to put a tune together) and so have given myself the challenge of creating some new tunes in a minimum of time and with a minimum of thought (that last bit's quite easy). I'm not aiming for a polished production, just a means to get some ideas flowing again following my recent break from it all.

That's meant the re-introduction of my "one take" rule for all the "live" (i.e. non-MIDI) parts to stop myself getting bogged down trying to get the "perfect take".

I think it's working OK so far, this piece was bolted together in a few hours on Saturday afternoon, then roughly mixed at stupid o'clock on Sunday morning with a big mug of coffee.

The drums need some work methinks, especially the snare (which was sounding rather harsh through my cheapo headphones at work today). I find snares particularly tricky to get right in a mix; they're such an important drum sound but they can also be somewhat tiring to listen to if not mixed in properly.

Anyway, let me know what you think - as ever, any suggestions muchly appreciated.

Royston

edit: I plugged a different snare into the track this morning and I think this has warmed it up somewhat (much more like I wanted it to sound). I'm going to make the rhythm a bit more interesting and add a sprinkling of cymbals, but then that'll be it.

Wow you are a great guitarist!

That's my only comment.

Many thanks Braincell, you should hear me when I haven't pressed the "record" button!

I know exactly what you are talking about. Try recording for 1/2 hour. After about 10 minutes you forget record is on; especially if you damaged as many brain cells as I did.

I'll need to get a bigger hard drive to try that one out

Sometimes it's just my perception of how I'm playing, rather than my playing going to pot when the recording light comes on. It often feels heavy and unrhythmical when recording, but not too bad on playback.

Have uploaded a slightly different version now (warmer snare drum).

Hi,

yeah, good track. Live beats? Well, I think it needs some corrections, but I like an idea!

Reggae bass goes with anything. Interesting hybrid. It has sort of a retro sound yet the pads are very modern. A live midi drummer would be best for this. I worked with a drummer playing my drumkat and it made a world of difference over my feeble drums.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Final version uploaded now - I've worked on the drums quite a bit and tweaked the mix, I think it's a bit smoother now.

Time to put it to bed!

I quite liked it too, nice tune. The guitar part deserves more attention, and so I would like it louder and doubled with double track operation, or with a plugin that could do it. Keep working
