A friend of mine wanted to send a demo so I helped him compose a song. He played the loops, I did the mixing. We worked on melody together then I did the chorus arrangements. He's singing the lead and I'm doing all the back chorus.

Sounds are from Triton and Nord Modular, and pulsar for mixng and mastering. The noise sweep you hear occasionally is actually my friend going "swwsshhhhh' with his MOUTH!! (we did it as a little joke)

The song is mainly in Japanese.. so those of you who are simply interested in what it sounds like to sing in Japanese, please give it a try. Also, the lyrics are totally nonsense, even in Japanese. We just wanted some lyrics and wrote it by thinking of random subjects and predicates and puting them where ever it fit the melody.

So all you vocals out there, any suggestions? I know my friend''s definitely off with pitch and timing but other than that.

huh, it could just be my imagination but... is this post driving people away? Not too many R&B people on board? Am I clogging this forum? Japanese singin' just won't cut the cake?

i don't think you're driving people away, tho people might be a bit confused by the lyrics! "take my season from your nissan" ??

cool music production, very smooth

maybe, try a little dynamic processing on the lead vocal toward the beginning to smooth out the volume fluctuations.

thanx for the comment guys.
The volume fulxuation was a killer. His voice was barely triggering the gate on the mic preamp while the higher notes were MEGA loud. When I do leads, I usually get 1 chorus down with 1 take and usually don't change volumes within the take.. but that's because I'm used to controling my volume... in this case, maybe it's better if I chop the take up and do some surgical tweaks. As it is, I've already minimised to dynamic range by heavy, heavy limiting, and it seems like it's not working so well. Any suggestions as to overcome extreme dynamic range?

Hi ken,
The song is pretty COOL! Like everyone said, your friend vocal need more verbs and maybe Para-Eq (Example: Freq:950~1800Hz, Q:3~4.6, gain:-7 to -3db) should be doable.
Regards,
Long

whataaaa?? -7db? seems I've got too much of something in there.. I'll work on it. I'm still looking for optimal settings for vocals in Pulsar. Specific comments like yours really helps.

By the way, the first chorus "taaaaake" is bad harmonization plus, I'm slightly off tune. Shucks. hehe, maybe next time.

I wouldn't worry about Vocal that much, as for me just turn the music louder enough to cover the vocal ( a Joke)! A lot of poeple do that! (not a joke). If you can keep the vocal in same (almost) db levels, it is a trick!
BTW, we like your composing, it really be great! (no kidding)
keep up the good works!

Long

I'm flattered.. just flattered. This'll keep me smiling for a while. I really do wonder why the R&B song is beating all my other songs... (in terms of hits) I thought the vocoder song would be more appreciated.. haha.

Hi all,
How can u give advise when u are listenning to a Compressed MP3 song !! of course the EQ cannot be good !
All the orchestration is incredible ! the song is at a High US R&B production ...
It's good to bring to Japanese People this quality level.
Harmonisations, orchestration,the Voices harmo,the sounds...
A very good Job !!
But ( because there is always a but !!) the singer is not good as you Ken ! not so bad but I miss something sensual here ;o)
