This is slightly rushed (for competition )and i can hear a few problems such as the occaisional overload...

Have gigged it a bit and some think it's my best song. Would like opinions on Vocals and Mixing/Mastering...

Feel free to be critical but give reasons and no blanket criticisms...

Nice lovesong.
Hapless I can´t say much about the quality of sound but the guitar and vocals sounds nice and balanced through my poor speakers.

Me and my girlfriend likes it and we think it has a good and understandable `vibe` as you know about the lonely feeling that you describe.

For me the end comes to quick or too surprisingly, I would change it, cancel the ´you are in my dreams` sentence and just repeat `all I want to know is where you are!´, maybe a bit raised in the tone at `know is´, down again to the end and slower sung at `you are´.

Just a thought.

Good luck for the competition.

sounds like performed with the guitar live playing (?) to me.
So the voice gets some level 'modulation', but it sounds authentic that way. On the other hand the emphasized parts loose too much gain, possibly influenced by the compressor settings, too.

I agree with Chris that it's a really nice tune, with potential in several directions.
Possibly you could sing a doubled voice over the above mentioned (gain reduced) parts.
In that case I'd put a very minimalistic rythm section in the backgound to keep the original character of the singer performance.
With only the guitar playing a doubled voice is probably too artifical.

But this one could even be changed into a pop tune as cheezy as imagination goes
I've sent it through the STW MasteringComp - shall I upload (or mail) the version ?

cheers, Tom

Yea, I would appreciate the compressed version with instructions on what you used and what choices you made.

I am glad people liked it, although it was not recorded live... Funnily enough the original guitars were recorded using an Audigy Plat Pro 2 () before I purchased my Creamware. The vocals were recorded using a Audio Technica AT4040 and a M-Audio DMP3. There is no compression on any of the parts, I had something like 5 hours to mix this and two more complex songs and I didn't want to spoil the 'natural' vibe of the song - i had deliberately upon advice NOT used any percussion. It seems like the right choice as two seperate people have commented that the song would be better off as it is (one ex-pro singer and one classically trained pianist) so I figured I would run with that. You might notice that there is also a classical guitar on the bridge but the bridge that only doubles the acoustic exactly. Good quality aged Spanish Acoustic, if a little small and ragged.

I have put convolution reverb on this one, using the sends to put three channels through it at varying wetness levels so that the reverb is hardly recognisable.

I am thinking - re-record the classical acoustic (was recorded in hurry and overloads in parts) and re-record the vocals.

While I loathe admitting it this is probably the best 'hook' song I have written and I have had more compliments from this song than any other - it was the song I ever wrote. I placed it first on the competition demo and it will probably take pride of place when I start selling this on a 4-track CD (for a minimal amount of cash, all profit to charity type affair) at gigs to raise profile and start to contact A&R.

Thanks for the comments on vocal's modulation level - it's not compression but microphone technique and it's something I need to watch...
