For some reason my pc doesnt recognise my C: drive when I start it up with a windows 98 startup disk! I dont know how to get into dos mode any other way to fomat my C: drive! (Need to reinstall from scratch to clear some issues with plug-ins)
Any suggestions?

I assume your hard disk is in NTFS format. Normal DOS/win98 fdisk will not be able to delete NTFS partitions. There are tools on the net that will do the job - one such is called DELPART (just google on it).
Be very careful with this utility and read the instructions properly - particularly if you have other partitions than just C:/ on your hard drive.

One day i had been looking all over the place and i couldn't find this '98 bootdisk. Just when I was about to go mad, I found
http://www.bootdisk.com with bootdisks for almost every OS. I think XP bootdisk (which is 6 diskettes!) will do the trick for you

That should do it too, but you don't need to boot up with 6 disks if you only need to delete and format the partition
By the way, I wonder if theres any way of making a bootable CD version of that 6-disk XP bootdisk? It might be a bit more viable then...
