I'm investigating about the fancy studio lamps that some of you have or have seen in some pics around the world...those that have colored bubbles inside this liquid..(I have no idea how they are called), any way, I saw some of them at the mall last weekend.., and I was surprised by the fact the bubbles material needs to be heated in order to start moving in the lamp's liquid. I realized the lamp has to be on for about 45 mins and it really gets hot, wich I'm concerned be a problem for any studio.
So the question is : Do you guys know some kind of lamp device, that looks cool enough to replace those lamps, and bring a nice environment for a studio without being so hot?

My idea is to find some kind of lamp device similar to this one



wich is a Cold Cathode that looks really cool, I know IT'S NOT A LAMP.. hehe, but sure it would be cool if they build a lamp with that technology.

Snoopy, stay away from these:
they produce tremendous electrical noise
The gas inside is ignited by a high voltage pulse and the driving circuitry contains large inductivities.
But if you like spectral illuminations:
they are nice for some nonsense do-it-yourself activities to relax from recording or whatever.
If you project a lightbulb to a wall and hold a piece of glass into the beam under a certain angle it generates that effect.
You may have noticed similiar colors od CDs, some give nice illuminations by reflecting light.

I found a super fancy kitshy case for 70 € with colored lights outside he case, it's like i'm in hong kong... It's not neon gaz but classical leds turning under a plastic tube with bubbles inside. It's cute.

I use this computer for lava lamp and aquarium purpose.... (+ games and other stoopid apps)

i havn't detected any noise as there's no soundcard in that computer....
There's no brand on the case (v770 or something).
I wouldn't show it off in a studio though, or may be during lunch pauses....

Yeah - it sounds like you are describing a Lava Lamp. I have one here in my studio as well. It's just a bottle containing some kind of oil that needs to be heated up. There is some wax-like substance inside that melts and begins to bubble up and down. They usually come in all sorts of colors. The lamp is just a regular ol' stove-type lamp. The base does get a little warm during usage but not enought to cause concern.

while we're at it...
recently someone offered one of these really old all-in-one Macs (SE) on eBay.
He got a fair amount beyond the regular price range because:
instead of tube and electronics it contained an AQUARIUM

I know a guy who collection old mac se for exactly that purpose... The last time i saw him he had a couple of these. Really cool looking in a room!

I've had lava lamps for many years and they don't really get too hot. It is only a light bulb warming them up after all. I do put them on a heat resistant mat though if they are going to be on for any lenght of time.
As an alternative, why not go for one of the oil wheel projectors that cast ever changing patterns on the walls?
