For any of you with 'the crackles' that have read the 'enable DMA' tip and found that they have no DMA box there to check (and giving up there), try installing the software that came with your motherboard that had been sitting at the back of your cupboard, instead of spending the past four months tearing you hair out trying every possible combination of optimisation tips like yours truly!
It won't help you if your motherboard doesn't suupport DMA, but it will if you're ignorant like me and the company you bought the PC from had installed all the drivers and software except the motherboard stuff.
Just thought I'd share this in case there was anyone else in the same position.
