Is anyone using IBM deskstar HDD in their setup? I have had strange problem possible related to the hard disks, drop outs and wav. file data corruptions. I'm using Abit TH7II mobo with intel P4 1,6 and rambus 512mb. Has anyone had some problems of that kind possible related to the HDD setups?

My advice: backup everything NOW!

I was using a 60G IBM Deskstar HD for a few months. It worked fine for a while but then I noticed it started to make some strange noises. I stupidly ignored the noises until last week when it CRASHED right in the middle of a session. From then on it was unusable and I had to replace it with a new (Maxtor) HD.

I recently found out this is a very common story with the Deskstar drives (even though IBM denies it), so beware!

Be a bit more specific about what type of Deskstar you have. The problem is only with one range of them. No reason to start a panic if nothing going on.

I have 2 60GXP and 1 120 GXP. The former ones are supposed to be somewhat shaky. I have however never seen anyone describe the type of data loss described above. Only complete crashes after hearing some srtange noices in the drive first. So I ask if anyone has seen this type of malfunction - that is corrupted Wav. files. The corruptions are similar to dropouts (beebs and loud cliks). If fixed in any wav editor (cubase, vawelab etc.) the pops will dissaper but new on will be present instead. This happens especially in big Wav. files. However the dropouts are not made while recording - they appear later!

the wave files reside in errors on the Drive...
*Check it ASAP!!*
If you continue to use this drive it will most likely die... mine did ;(

point taken - did you get strange errors (or dropouts)like this before the drive died?

They're called DeathStar for a reason.
