I am wondering if you used the Intel App. Accelerator. It is not compatible with some of those MB although they use Pentium processors. Use the drivers that came with that MB.

Intel BX440 chip and the IDE controller are supported by win 98SE, with no need of installing any driver.

Don´´t try to install anything else, because you may cause conflicts.

Does your motherboard includes any extra hard disk controller?
What´s your MB model number?

Could be your mobo needs the driver for ATA...I've got an older system using an ABit be6 that has seperate IDE 33 and IDE ata66 ports, Win 98 doesn't recognise the ATA66 ports.....a supplied floppy with the ata66 drivers came with the mobo, if you don't install them the saeme message as you got shows up in the Win98 deivice manager.
Can I suggest that you go to your mobo manufacturers website to see if you need similar type of drivers.....
