Hi all

I'm brand new to PlanetZ - what sort of air do you breath here?! Anyway, the question:

How do you add reverb to an Akai sample in STS4000? I used to work with wavs and had a great time working with SoundForge and Goldwave to get all sorts of audio effects into my samples. And yet, with the all-powerful Pulsar with STS4000, I can't even add reverb. Am I missing something obvious?

Alternatively, are there any Akai-sample editors out there for PC? This could help with everybody's problem of getting instruments to sound like instruments. Hear from you soon!

You run the sampler into a mixer (wow... just like hardware heh) and put a Reverb on an AUX bus or in that channel's Insert. Pretty easy, yeah.

Oh yeah - and welcome to PlanetZ!

A few little utilities that you might like are the King of Snake STS Add and STS Create. You can map a directory of .WAV's across the keyboard (useful for drums) or make a separate program out of each wave- all automatically. Simple little external, free utilities.

BTW you can fully edit all the options for the program directly in the STS - try it it's pretty convenient for me... lots of pages there including LFOs, envelope settings, keygroups, etc. Check out the most recent STS manual for a good overview and a simple walk-through example at the end!

I had a quick look at the Tips'n'Tricks suggested by atOmic and came across the Iouts, which suggests to me that if I declare, say, a trumpet as Iout 4, then connect STS4000's output 4 (and, automatically, 5 for the R) to a reverb module, which I then in turn route to a mixer, that should work... makes sense to me!

I have been using the standard Dynamixer to conserve DSP load, and because the BigMixer seems rather scary still - but it also appears, as subHuman stated, that I could put a module into one of the AUX buses and set that going as a reverb, too. It's becoming clearer!

As always, though, it's a question of DSP load - I have 4 on the one card and on nearly all of my projects the load is red-lining. But that's another forum, I guess!

Are you running SFP?

Yup, I'm running Pulsar2, but only have the 4 DSPs on the PCI card (or at least, that's what my "DSP Load Monitor" is showing in Pulsar. Looks like I'll need a bigger PC with more slots... oops.

SFP is the Pulsar OS software version, Pulsar is the name of your CW dsp card

D'oh! getting all mixed up with my TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) - and with my hard-/software combinations. Anyway, I think the point is that I have 4 DSPs and that's limiting me in terms of processing power and modules I can stick into each project. Or am I missing something important?!

Coming back to the original question and answer, I'm not sure yet if adding modules into AUX buses in the BigMixer also adds load onto the DSP (I suspect it does), so it might be worth checking to see what is most DSP-efficient - BigMixer plus drop-in modules, or Dynamixer with external modules. I'll see if I can spot any differences this weekend.

BTW, (another TLA, sorry!), where does everybody get their smilies from?

sorry to say, but your right... if you got a pulsar I card, pulsar II should give you 6 DSP's

external or as insert or aux... shouldn't be different regarding DSP use. the big mixer is quite DSP hungry though...

DSPs ! They make me hungry, greedy even.

But what you have to remember is that considering the near-hardware quality modules you can load up, and the flexibility you get, it really can be a magical system.

You just have to look at it in terms of pro-audio rather than run-of-the-mill hobbyist stuff.

And using the cards in conjunction with software plug-ins there really is a lot you can achieve.

Unfortunatley it is for PC only.
I had this problem too but now i have a PC laptop as well so problem solved for me.
It really is a great program in its simplicity.

This week I explored the HAlion, the STS3000, and also the (great but mono) SDS, but for me it's clear that none of them can beat my Kurzweil K2500 HW sampler/synth, as with some other HW samplers, as everybody will agree.
(Long before the Acces Virus (have a A), Kurweil's filters were as good, TMO).

Compared to the K2500 filters, the filters of the SW samplers are not very impressive to me, tho those of the SDS are not bad (3rd party, CW can learn from Volkert Dietz!).

The mod department of the STS is better dan the one of the HAlion, but the K2500 crosses all borders.

Saving files in STS is horroble, HAlion is perfectly integrated in Cubase, etc.

Anyway, this is not the right thread for reviews

It's just that I'm in the middle of a decision making proces about what to use as the standard way of sample handling, when some modulation and extended processing are involved.

From quality point of view the Kurzweil is the best and only choise (no boost), but what if the SW samplers can do the job as well, if basic sample handling is enough?

I hate it when I have to weigh musical and non musical factors, at least during a song creating proces.

What has the filter of the K2500 to do with the fact that adding an external midi instrument creates a third or next 'platform' that you'll have to run.

Think of all the file saving consequences, the use of external Midi, OMS Setup (on mac), etc.

Making music, I don't wanne have to deal with thinking about where to put a sample in my studio, never being sure about changing demands of the song in devellopment.

Concerning synths it's different.
You choose a synth coz of its character, and IF that's true for samplers too, than just for the K2500, so...

There's no real solution at the moment.
Choosing to hang on a platform for may be one (important) sample IS something!

Aren't you unsure about sample organising dilemma's all the time?

Isn't everybody of you, with a so beloved HW sampler, involved with a struggle against threatening divorce??

What if the STS ever would reach the today's HW sampler quality level?

When that moment would dawn, implimenting the solution of at least my problem, we even couldn't sell ours expensive sampler anymore, coz nobody's interested. :C

About STS sampler, i would really love if they'd be updated a bit. I think it about times, and since cw have now stated that some devices will benefit from the minimax filters, i think sts samplers if a good place to start. They are some of the most expensive devices from cw, and when used by someone, it is usualy used everyday. It is a devices that each and every song you make could potentialy contains one. It is also a crucial component of the sfp platform.

I played around with bunch of other sw samplers. And even if for example Giga as alot of polyphony & midi channels, for modulation, filters and ease of use, sts is clearly the winner. Halion as a nicer interface than giga, but filters are horrible imho. EXS24 is almost there, but interface is the worst of all, and not enough flexible, but almost all features are there, filter are OK, but modulation is lacking some important parameters that i use in sts already. The big plus of exs24 is disk streaming like giga, the big big big con is that it's gonna dissapear from PC eventualy. Yes, i can still use it now, but in a year or so, i'll maybe have another sequencer, since Logic won't get updated for PC.

Anyway, my point is, that for now, i'm back on STS, uninstalled all other sw samplers, and even looking to get a STS5000 from somebody. Cuz it's the best 'allround' sampler for my needs. It is maybe not the best sampler in the world, but ONE of the best available now for me. And, btw, you can't beat that zero latency of sts...

Well, it's DONE, i found my STS5000! Here on planetZ, again, the best place to get anything for Creamware cards.

I'm just anxious to play with it now!
