I was making music last night and everything was (finally) running smoothly. I was using about 2/3 of my dsps and all seemed fine when suddenly sfp stopped making any sound. I could still click on things and move stuff about but there was no sound and the mixer's metrebridge had frozen.

When I tried to reload a device it said that it couldnt communicate with the board and suggested reloading all devices to try and cure the problem. I clicked cancel and SFP bombed out with a blue screen.

Could this be due to overheating?

Once I reloaded SFP it seemed to be ok.

I have an old scope board and a new scope srb board togheter in my pc. The only fan I have is the cpu fan. The surface of the pc gets warm.
I imagine it would be tricky to fit a fan inside cos its a 4u rackmount case with little room in it.

Could this be due to overheating?

This is the first thing that I thought when I started reading your post. With 2 SCOPEs, I had to turn on the front fan on my 4U rack, as well, otherwise a few hours in, after things heat up, I get the same thing. You definitely want more than just a CPU fan with 2 scope boards!

hmm
figured as much
I think i might have to get one of those fan-on-a-card things and put it between the 2 cards.

last thing i wanna do is melt them !

cheers sub.

I had one of those fan on a card things.

It was great until it started making funny noises. I think the bearings went out after only a few months. But while it worked it worked well. Really blew some air but it was pretty quiet until it went bad.

Maybe there are better quality models than the one I bought (sorry to say I don't remember which brand it was). I bought it at Best Buy or one of those places. They don't cost much. Get one and try it.

Yeah I had one of those fan cards, and it burned out in mine, too - but even worse, it became a small heater when it did that  Now I just use normal high quality quiet case fans (Pabst,Panaflo)

hmm those things sound like trouble then, in fact on a website where they sell them I see similar comments. For now Ive strapped 2 old sunon fans with wire ties to the frame of the case pointing down on the cards. Ive also removed a spare blanking plate and the sync card which Im not using to provide exhaust space. Ill see how this goes and if it suffices Ill probably just swop the fans for some quieter pabst ones.

It would be nice to stick a large 120mm fan above the cards but unfortunately their isn't enough space between them and case cover.

hmm not sure if those fans have done much, the top of the case is still getting very warm.

still, it hasnt crashed yet this evening which is a good thing.

The best thing is to add a fan to the front of the cabinet/tower that takes the air in. (The powersupp. takes it out)
And DON'T take any backplates etc. out. In fact, make it as air-tight as possible and let the fans do the work.
