hello everybody,actually i am trying to
record an ibanez electro bass.I am not so happy with the final sound(the dynamic is not so good).My routing is like this:BASS to LITTLE MIC AMPLIFIER to PULSAR to cubaseVST5.Should I buy a kind of special amplifier or a compression for the bass before to enter in pulsar?what is the best solution(or routing)?thank you and have a nice day ay y

A Base Pod from Line 6 is probably the best solution for base-guitar; there are FXs and Amp simulations that ROCKS. Best unit in its kind, ever. You can use it to input any other instrument as well, because it is very flexible. So it is not just good for base sounds, but for everything else.

I still feel there should be something like the Pod in Pulsar as well. So far there's only the ampsimulators from Ingo Raven you could check out (as far as I know). Compared to the amount of synteseizers and effects I'd be nice to have some more of that stuff.

the power of the dsp in the pod should not be that much... so i think the algorithms can be ported to the sharcs.
who makes that pod devices? we should mail him

Don't forget Ingo's iRAmp, I think he also has a base version, look on planetZ. I believe there is another amp simulator, but I can't remember who made it off the top of my head, anyone?

iRAmp ? Is that like an improved version or something ? Where can I find it. By the way, e-mailing Line6 maybe isn't such a bad idea. I just hope that the Pulsarpods won't be too expensive coz I gotta have it.

i always need limiting on a live instrument recording (preferably b4 the ad converter). live sound has a dynamic range of approx 140db the recording can handle maybe 100-110 db and the db scale is logarithmic.so- the live sound has a range of soft to loud perhaps 10,000 times what the recording can handle. to get record w/o distortion(distortion is fatal in a digital recording)and w/o a limiter,one must record at a low level.low level recording sounds thin and grainy.the only way to record at a high level w/o distortion is to limit the input.high recording levels give rich tone. also, compressed signals sit in the mix better.

I put a little boss compressor after the bass ,the sound is a little better.

forum and it seems that record a bass is not so easy(for direct).It is a kind of mix beetween bass,compression,effects,amplifiers,...there is no simple solution but i have trust in my pulsar.thank you i'm continuing to search informations.and i'll be back coc999.

Have you tried one of those DirectBoxes (hardware)? Takes a HiZ input and outputs a line level signal for guitar/bass, etc. They're usually under $100, and I think you might even be able to find one with a tube in there to warm your sound a bit

well(assuming you're asking me),i like a limiter to "tape" and either a limiter or compressor after.remember a limiter is a compressor with a very high(10-1 or greater)ratio, so the first step keeps peaks under control. the second step further squeezes the signal further.depending on the material,i might chain a couple of comps.it's better generally to do these things in stages rather than all at once to control breathing,pumping and artifacts.

good advice!to get the hiz mic level signal into pulsar(or any mixer)it is a must to convert it to loz. however most DIs do not give line level outputs.they usually have a mic output so a mic pre would be necessary if not using an external mixer.(there are boxes for recording instruments like bass which do have a line level out,however, a good DI box and a good mic pre usually delivers better tone.)
