I was just wondering, what are the best specs on a PC to get at the moment?

Are you better off going P4 2 Ghz or a p3 1.4Ghz tualatin?

I just got a P4 1.8 512K L2 Asus P4B266 with 512Mb DDR SDRAM & two Seagate Barracuda drives, and Pulsar has never been so smooth. I've done a few standard tweaks, but nothing deep and it's smooooooth. In fact it's never run so well. It's quite astounding. I'm a very happy puppy. But it's running so well I'm still a bit anxious that it's all a temporary dream and it'll all collapse. Hopefully this dread will pass

Hey spirit, (or anyone else for that matter)do you know anyone in sydney who builds DAW's? or is it more worth it to build my own?

GeForce2 dual head <- this is going! The Matrox G400 dual head I had before was much better. The second monitor video quality was much better.

I don't do much synth /sampler techno stuff. No talent. I mainly do multitrack recording for bands etc, and I don't run much native stuff at all (VST's, DXi's). The sequencer is basically used as a multitrack recorder and for automation. Everything else is done in pulsar. So I don't really need a huge processor. The only thing I may have to watch out for is the CUSL2-C's 512MB ram limitation but to date this has not been a problem.

Yeah i'm doing mostly multitrack stuff through my A16 too...

What sort of track count are you getting with the p3?

Well I haven't had to go past a 24 Trk mix yet (24 audio trks playing simultaneously that is). However i did a test a while back and was able to playback 24 trks 48kHz 24bit whilst recording another 10 tracks at the same time without any problems. I don't know what the practical limit is yet.

dguna have you tried factory sound. They are in Melbourne. They can build DAW's for good customers. A friend had one build not that long ago from them. But at least they are friendly and can give you tips. I personally wouldn't get anyone to build me a DAW becasue it's better to build your own. However in your case maybe it would benifit you. However from my point of view I'm becoming a extreme PC User (with the help of a friend). I hope my DAW will be near to silent with the help of Water Cooling and very very low noise fans (12dB).

They are selling the Pulsar 2 for $2200 AU in store right now on special. I know cause I got one last week.

I was contemplating getting a preconfigured DAW, but for the price, I could easily build one myself for alot cheaper. I'm working on a budget but i want to get a system that will work and last as long as possible. Do factory sound make reasonably cheap DAW's?

I looked at http://www.AAVIMT.com.au and they have pretty good systems... but making my own stills seems to be cheaper and more flexible.

There is a company called Carillon http://www.carillondirect.com based in the UK that makes pcs dedicated for music production. They are sexy rackmountable pcs designed for low noise and strength. They use intel boards and cpus and quiet seagate barracuda drives housed in silent drive enclosures. Complemented with radial cpu fans and super quiet psus they are perfect for DAWs.

Unfortunately their standard pricing is heavily marked up. However I have found that by speaking to the right person there and convincing them you can get stuff like memory + harddisks cheaper elsewhere they are prepared to match prices.

Ive just bought a 2ghz, 1g ram, 40gig + 80gig disks,CD+win98se, including their special front panel midi knobs + transport facias for about £1600. You can definately build a similar spec machine for yourself cheaper but the extra for the nice case+ also access to their sample collection swung it for me.

When I receive it and the rest of my studio Ill post an "inital impressions" review of the lot.

I love the look of the carillion systems and the specs for noise are quite impressive, but I'm over here in Oz, so after the markup and the shipping, ....hhehehe ... I'll be way over budget...

I've just put in an order for p4 1.8...should be here on friday or monday... I'll let you know how that goes...
