hey guys....i have been recently tryig to get nice pad sounds out of mod2 with moderate succes, (using defex's saw 16 as a starting point...thanx m8).What i really want to know though is how to go about building a patch that resembles the magnificent pads of hardware synths like virus or korg's wavestation sr....i am still sort of new to this and don't even know what to look for when it comes to hardware emulation.....so anything in this direction would help....and I will post my patches if anyone cares 2 c what it is i am after....thanx.

you could go to Ben Walker's site, there are patches with brief explaination and signal flow diagrams, also on links page you will find links to great series of articles in Sound on Sound magazine.

if you are after Virus specificaly you could also try downloading manual from Access site, to learn about its structure.

my latest inclination towards getting a thicker sound in a patch was to add a suboctive sinus oscillator, it didn't work out exactly like i hoped, but when the patch is overloading and clipping the extra ooomph from the sinus oscillator pushes it just that bit further which makes for a nice thick sound. i would like to expand upon this idea by maybe deriving an average frequency sub-octave of 3 or more tuned oscillators. all i did initially was make it suboctave of the mvc frequency.

modulation, modulation, modulation, layer, layer, layer, pan, pan, pan, effect, effect, effect.

i'm curious if you find any presets from here or included with the modular, thick enough?

i find much inspiration from them.

i am not familar with the virus, but as michu has pointed out, dl the manual and have a read through it. someone here was trying to emulate the virus in the modular, they haven't posted it yet. maybe they would be a good person to ask about getting the sound of the virus.

but i DO believe there is a download of all the virus base waveforms here. but the sample oscillators are nowhere near as flexible as the "dsp" oscillators, its a toss up. i made a patch with sampled oscillator waveforms, i sacrificed osc sync, and portamento, but i decided the "character" of the waveforms outweighed these two features. still, i'd like to try the patch with dsp oscillators instead.

so much to do in modular land.

best.

bwa, ken, never mind. i see it as a kind of humor, or at least, these kind of replies or discussions ours truly brings on, make me laugh (and, once in a while, think too). if it wasn't for all the reactions, he probably wouldn't have been here with us anymore.

(oops, did it myself  )
