recantly upgraded my computer: I biught a Hewlet Packard VL 800 with a P4 1.5 Ghz with 256 Mb memory, an NVIDIA Geforce 2 GTS OEM card and SB live Value OEM. I added my Pulsar 2 in slot 5. Furthermore, there is a USB midiman 2x2. There is some basic noise when I turn the volume high. Yet when the Pulsar software is started, the pitch of the noise becomes higher and more prominent. When, on top of that, I launch Cubase 5, the pitch of the noise gets even higher and more disturbing. When changing between programs, the noise stops and takes off again.
I tried, setting the level of the acceleration to 0 and the PCI latency for slot 5 to 006A, to no avail. I contacted my Pulsar2 supplier, who told me there is nothing to do.
Could you give me some advice.

First, try removing the MidiMan USB, see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't, try removing the SBlive. Next, what kind of audio cables are you using? A lot of noise problems are related to poor quality audio cables - I suggest to use shielded guitar/instrument cables and highquality connectors - this does make a huge difference.
Finally list your motherboard model/chipset, some boards have a noisier USB port if removing the Midiman USB fixes your problem.

With regards to the cables, they are pretty good quality and worked fine with my former computer.
I tried disabling USB and SBLive, but to no avail.
Iam wondering, I hear this sound with my Headphones on. Not with my monitors, am I being too snesitive and is it normal to hear it with the headphones on. I have all my audio routed through a notepad Folio, which has a headphone out>
Many thanks in advance.

is it some kind of "crack and pop" noise or is it "hiss" noise if it is a "crack and pop" noise i wouild look at the computer pci bus etc, if it is a "hiss" i would look at something like ground loop or bad cables(something analog).

oh yeah i hope you are not talking about the SB live! they all have that high whistly noise, and it will change depending on what the PCI bus is doing.

I changed the card from slot 5 to slot 2, removed SB, increased PCI bandwith and the noise seems to have gone, touch wood. Many thanks for your input.
