I have the Pulsar I, SRB I and Luna II. I also have the ADAT Sync plate. I was thinking about getting the Alesis ADAT Edit card for another computer which has SCSI so i can slave the two together and get more HD tracks. Does anyone know if this is a good idea? Has anyone tried it?

sounds like it'd work.......
how many tracks do you need?(i can get at least 30 with a via chipset)i'm suitably impressed.still, it seems like there must be an easier, cheaper way to add tracks.how about upgrading your current system? just thinking out loud tho- forgive me if you're past all that.

Thanks,
I don't really know what I'm doing. I have this extra computer, and the Alesis card is $300.00 so it doesn't sound like I would have to spend much more. It comes with cables. I could add an ATA hard drive and get more tracks cheaper but I could add the drive and use the other computer and have around 80 tracks. I tend to use as many as are available. it's easier to mix when everything is separated.

well, definitely you want as much control as you are capable of handling.sounds worth a try.so it's a giant synchronized hd.i'm assuming data (audio) transfer to the master thru scsi for mixing.i'm not clear about why this needs to be sync'd. isn't this just a networking thing that way? or are you mixing traditionally with a desk and you have some digital out from each computer and sync'd software in each?

Well I want to use two computers for hard drive playback. You could think of one as being the central one although either could control the other and both can have independent actions. VST effects are limited by CPU power and the number of tracks are limited by the speed of you hard drives and the CPU.

hmmm to do what you seem to be suggesting to my brain, you need two similar systems (cw card, sequencing prog) sync'd.for about $350 get a luna and then pop for the additional $200 and get another sync plate. then you have digital outs and ins on each box and you can run maximum processing.
oops! you'd also need the luna 24 adat option for the best results(maximum tracks in and out)
if you're just networking the hd,i don't see any need for a sync card.

That's too expensive and I'm not just networking. I just want to get more tracks of audio running at the same time... more than is possible with only one computer. The amount of tracks on one computer like I mentioned before is limited by the speed of the HD and the speed of the CPU. The Alesis ADAT Edit card is only $300.00 and includes cables. I just wanted to know if anyone had any problems with it.

you're networking.how will you get sound out?does the adat card have audio outs?if so, you're in there.but please don't be mad. i'm not telling you what to do i'm just talking 'bout it.

(no joke) I've done complete mixes with 60 tracks using an older G4 ATA-66.
No problems.

Well if you can get 60 tracks one one computer, then you can get 120 on two. That's what I'm talking about! Yes the ADAT card has ADAT out and ADAT sync... that's why it is called ADAT Edit.

I don't think it is such a good idea.
I think there will be sync problems.
How were you going to sync the 2 computers?
SMPTE ?
Can Pulsar sync to SMPTE?

I haven't done more than 60 tracks because the mix didn't need more tracks.

I can use 20 tracks for the drums alone. It also gives you flexibility. I might have a sound which comes one time in the whole song. That sound deserves it's own track. Yes I can use the sampler for a virtual track but I tend to push the DSP load to it's limit even though I have 11 DSP chips.

well it still sounds interesting, but i think you still will need to have a sequencer loaded in computer 2 and then sync both computers.(doable, lots o sub-mixing) sounds cumbersome but probably not much more cumbersome than adats in reality. good luck! (of course, you already knew what you wanted to do. you don't need our advice or permission!)

Well if I had an ADAT laying around I would use it and I have an extra computer laying around so I might as well use it. I'm not so sure sub mixing is such a bad idea. I probably won't get around to doing this for 6 months. If anyone has a bad experience with the the Alesis "ADAT Edit" card and happens to read this post a reply here.

We have one computer (PC) running ADAT Edit.
It works very well by itself, but I had some problems solving strange system lockups when inserting one ADAT-lightpipe cable FROM one adat recorder to the card. Seems like it's a clock issue. It's not in use right now. Can't help you, sorry :/

hey!you could sync the second sequencer with midi.a luna is about $340.

also, if your tracks are 10 seconds long, you can prob'bly get 120 tracks on EACH computer.

You could but it would not be very in sync.
