A16

Post by Chilliman »

Managed to snag an A16 ultra nearby. Pick it up tomorrow. Noticed it had Z-link. Was that on more than a Luna? Every card I've ever seen that is a pulsar or higher has been a breakout cable and a pair of toslink optical ports, or a blank plate.
Most things that used FireWire type connections were pretty good. Wondered if there were io plates with z-link out there.
And something else. Downloaded the manual. There was a section about using balanced cables (TRS) and if you had to use TS mono cables, to only push them part of the way in. Thought I must be reading that wrong. Do I really have to swerve mono/unbalanced/TS cables on it?

yes, there were z-link i/o plates.

z-link is not firewire, it only uses a firewire cable. connecting to firewire+damage.

make the proper cables to go from balanced to unbalaced. btw-the impedance and level of balanced and unbalanced are different....

Yeah, I get that. It's clearly not FireWire. It's z-link. I've had a couple of pieces that used their own proprietary link over the cable format. They were good. RME being one.

Yeah, cables is basic stuff.
What I'm asking is, would mono cables actually damage the unit?
If so I'll have to label it up to make sure nobody else tries.

How is it for clocking? I want it to be a slave.

I don't have z-link.
My cards are classic io.

TRS to TS.JPG
that cable will not work because positive and negative polarity will cancel each other out if „mixed“ on a single tip. :-?

Bud, I am pretty sure I have that Rane pdf somewhere, but I’ll have to find it on the weekend as I won’t have access to it for a few days. Send me a pm reminder on Saturday and I will have a look then
