DSP hungry (mixer-)channel

Post by nebelfuerst »

I have 3 pairs of speakers, attached to my A16u.
To feed them, I use the mix-output of my mastermixer connected to 3 "channel", so I can set the volume for each pair of speakers.

Although my projects are less then 25% of XITE resources, adding three channels often gives dsp communication limit messages. I have to manually assign to dsp to get rid of this.
The channel-element seems very primitive to me, so I wonder why it causes this messages.
(I could add a complete large mixer, without getting warnings)

Which mixer are you using?
DSP communication errors have nothing to do with DSP load, it depends on the communication between the XITE DSP processors.
I often use the optimized STM mixers and they perform quite well with many channels.
I'm not sure on which mixer are you using, but following the guide on DSP allocation from the following link can be helpful:

It‘s probably due to the layer for external communication per device.
Each channel device needs it‘s own, while a mixer made of many channels only needs one.

It depends from the connections between the mixer and other devices.
I tried with a project including STM 48/96 connected to 64 ASIO channels, various ADAT, AES and analog IN/OUTS, also I added 3 single channel mixer modules connected to ADAT (are these causing the problem?), several reverbs, 2 modular devices, various compressors and effects, reached 40% of DSP usage.
Possibly there is some device to be assigned to a different DSP that is causing the problem.

Micromixers are your friend.

Here's a picture of the section, which causes the trouble.
I can assign all 3 channel to DSP 7 , which makes it work.
But when doing so on bigger projects, I get errors on reloading, although the project worked at saving.

Is there an other device doing the same job ?
Is there a way to see, what DSP is used for the surrounding devices ?

You may try a Dynamic Mixer with that trio and use the direct outs to send to destination.
(in non Xite Scope the DSP load by single Channels was at least noticeably higher than all under 1 surface)
Channel got a lot of features: midi, invert and 2 inserts.

Wow ! I never realised that direct outs in dynamic mixer.
Works perfect !

Maybe the Control Room device could serve your purpose.

I tried that before, but its outputs are Xor, but I want to run my speakers in parallel, too.

Not really on topic, but just to mention:
The Dynamic Mixer is my favorite Scope mixer. Has all essentials and low DSP footprint.
I may use several, building busses in routing window, sometimes (very simple submixes) replaced by a Micro Mixer.

Just to mention from my side: :)
I love BigmixerV2, because of the perfect overview.
Unfortunately, the risk of distorsion is higher compared to modern mixers.
