M-AUDIO KEYRIG 49 failing parts

Unfortunately, both, pitch bend and modulation wheels are failing more and more, they send random messages and it is annoying as I have to correct these messages by hand, I mean, with the mouse.

I have been searching these parts but they seem to be difficult to find. I am even thinking about replacing them with other parts, adapting other keyboard wheels.

If anybody here knows something about a shop that could sell it, or can point me to some place to search for it, I would be very thankful, thank you.

Look, this is the part I'm looking for:

That price is fair for parts and a full assembly, but dunno shipping...
Otherwise you need tools to unsolder/solder and get the properly sized pots, which are industrial parts and may be difficult to source in single quantity.

When your keyboard is too old to get original replacement parts (from M-Audio) and it is impossible to find these parts elsewhere, or when the original parts are too crappy anyway (which I experienced w/ the Pwheel and Modwheel pots of my Kurzweil PC361),- the solution is to find better quality sealed pots w/ same resistance (typical 10k lin for these controllers,- but no guarantee) which fit into the l.h.controller assembly,- which is mostly matter of the shaft´s form (p.ex. D-shaft), shaft diameter, length and bushing dimensions.
The dimensions of the pot´s housing might play a role too, depending on l.h.-controller assembly design.
Do you have tech skills and are able to measure everything and do a search for new pots @Mouser or Digikey?

If not, try to find a tech who can help.
Possibly one of your friends is and can do it ?

I´m sure, you just only need new pots !

I´ve found very good quality and sealed ALPS pots for my Kurz @ebay for EUR 10,- each,- which is already expensive for a 10K lin pot.
No need to buy original lower quality parts for way more money.
You know, in the Kurz, they use cheapo Alfa/Taiwan unsealed pots which crap out every half a year when you´re a heavy pitchbender, use larger pitchbend ranges than 2 semitone steps, and use the modwheel just as much.

Oops, I just noticed the sales link above reads „out of stock“.
Whatever, the exact same pots may be difficult to find, but you could extend the ribbon (by 2 3-wire lines) to regular pots (according to Bud‘s explanation) and mount them externally.
The spring loading mechanic is probably reusable for that purpose... or do your own design, it‘s not complicated. ;)

Thank you guys, very good ideas. No, I am not experienced in this kind of repairs, but I can be, I eventually through myself into anything I need to learn.

I see on the internet, many, many musicians complaining about M-AUDIO poor quality in those wheels, it is everywhere.

To build them externally could be a cool solution, or perhaps..., he he..., just buying a new MIDI keyboard altogether, but this is always the solution you want to avoid, despite being the simplest one.

Cheers

Yes, that's the problem, there isn't anymore, otherwise I would have gotten it immediately. I too think it is a good price for sure.

This is probably the world’s most elaborate and expensive pitch wheel ... (according to it‘s maker) :D

No need to go that far, though...

Well...., Astro, you have me an idea, I could try using a game Joystick, it could work I think

Yes, a classic joystick would do, but you have to check that pots are inside, not switches.
It would even operate both wheels simultaneously, you could have 1 or both directions spring loaded.
(similar to the Roland design)

The Synclavier Knob was in fact for real and a huge thing when they showed it at NAMM together with their Synclavier Go app.
(not sure if they plan another batch, though)
But the knob uses an endless encoder, not a pot. I have it as a DIY project with Arduino, based on an ALPS (!) jog/shuttle ripped from a trashed home video editor. Not started yet...

Very cool stuff you're telling me for sure.

I used to have a KORG M1 workstation, many, many years back, it was in 1989, and it had this kind of joystick switch, four way wheel you could say, it is very good for expression and, in a way, more precise because you get both parameters in one single movement. Hehe, I will try this crazy idea and will let you know how it works, cheers

Guys, I am rolling in the floor with this one, it is hilarious. I am getting it right now and will let you know. I didn’t know about this, but there are many little applications like this one, and here you have pitch and modulation through your cell phone.

Well..., it does not work, false advertisement. You get to know it doesn't work with Windows only after installing it, silly, well, it was little money anyway, this was a possible solution for me.

You would need to merge both incoming datastreams (the keyboard and the app) into a single midi input.

Loo, they do exist, but expensive for what it is, it is better a whole keyboard:
