Weird device surfaces

Post by Peter Drake »

While I appreciate the fine work that third party developers do for scope, there are quite a few, um, idiosyncratic, surface designs. For fun, I'm posting this blast from the past that burns my eyes. Presenting the ARS Resonar Sonoquid:

Some plugs these days feature THD - but this Ganja Dub Delay features a previous generation version called THC

Also the devices released by John Cooper, original host of these forums at https://www.planetz.com, were quite original designs!

This reminds me, I no longer have these in my Devices folder, might dig them up again :)

[edit: here's one screenshot thanks to archive.org planetz capture, more via the archive url]

They developed multitouch designs more than a decade before tablets appeared... :D

A round of applause for OP. Grab the opportunity to load up Wavelength ClapLab!

WL Mutant - personally I prefer more usable control surface but what a lovely design!
Image

and WL Microkit, looks small but sounds big!
Image

Mostly dynamics effects. d-comp and Final Liza probably amongst my favs. d-comp, neve style simple controls - but who needs more when there's auto-makeup!
Image

De`vice Infinilooperererererrrrr

For reference, a modular1 patch. Over 20yo, and still works!! Go try and run your other software from back in the day now. Hah!!

Paul Tanti, worldfamous on planetz as EarlyFirst, was best known for his reverbs. Here, 2 of them. The biggest, and the smallest:
Image

Then there was a couple of devices that had such a mad design, they play in their own league. Panels opening panels opening nested panels, that kinda stuff. Beautiful nonetheless:

Another from WL, here's Tubeflute. Toggle switches on the tiny central panel open the adjacent panels.
Image

Here's spacef's Moonlight. Not your every day delay! Smoke only when no urgent matters are foreseen the coming time, cos once you're out there there's no quick coming back!
Image

This one is the light version, in a synth. What you can do with "just one subosc"! If you ask me, that's not just a subosc you're looking at:
Image

Synchrotron. Main panel has the device name, and opens many other panels. Some of which, like the Pattern panel, open other panels yet again:

Looks fairly normal until you try to read some of those controls. Might be in Klingon, but to be honest I'm afraid to ask.

derknott had a great collection of unique designs. Rather than posting all of them, here is a PDF with some listed with descriptions.

Some of that derknott stuff loaded the graphics really weirdly on my system, like with the meters floating off in space apart from the rest of the device, and the button to close the surface way off someplace else. Alas, I cannot post an image because the offending devices are long gone. I've never seen that .pdf though, I'll add that to my manuals for future moments of confusion :D
