(excerpt taken from webpage...)
As a man of many, interconnected facets, John Chowning has played a leading role in several chapters of the history of electronic music. As a composer, his is one of the few essential names in any overview of computer music made in the United States in the early seventies. In 1964, with the help of Max Mathews (from the legendary Bell Labs, where computer music was virtually born) and David Poole from Stanford University, Chowning began using Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence laboratory for his experiments. Years later, in 1975, he founded the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford, which remains one of the key centres in music technology research anywhere in the world. Lastly, in his role as developer, Chowning is the inventor of FM synthesis: the technique that revolutionized the world of synthesizers and the sound of electronic music in the eighties.

Chowning charts a historical overview of the different branches of his artistic career, focusing on his interest in the human voice, the creation of new sonorities, and being a pioneer in a discipline at a time when using computers to generate music was a leap into the void between creative eccentricity and scientific adventure.

Look what just arrived in the mail. I am trying to find that famous "lately bass" patch.

I think his work was used in the DX7.

Once you get that board going check into a used FS1r.
I use on I got from ebay for 700 USD.
Best synth I ever bought for versatility, that's for sure.
Great sounds too.

This guy here has done FM demos forever and I love watching him throw his head back during those
Jan Hammer Pitch Bend solos.

You can dump all of the DX/TX stuff into the FS1r too. Sounds better and the FX are damn good.
SPX90 most likely.

Hmm,

Yes, I've heard of that rack. But I wanted something with keys and a couple sliders. I used to have a TX802 which I got rid off. I don't have any rack gear right now. I understand how FM works, but I usually start with an existing patch then modify it. Unless it's something simple like additive synthesis. I used to program the OPL3 chip on a SoundBlaster all the time about 20 years ago. There are a few S3M files I created with just FM. I paid 300$ for this one and it's in very good shape. Yes, the Yamaha FX are really good. The ones in my 1995 VL7 were crazy amazing for the time. I don't know which processor was used, but the reverbs were terrific.

I believe the "Lately Bass" is specific to the TX81Z which does have a few differences compared to the DX7, but you can create something similar on the DX7 - you might find this thread helpful:

I also did find a video of how to create the Lately Bass at some point, but can't find it atm.

Dawman: When did you get your FS1R? Second hand prices has gone through the roof the last year and a half. I was lucky and got mine for a similar price as you did 1½ year ago.

I believe I had the "lately bass" or "solid bass" for my TX802, so it's possible.

I guess people are realizing how good those Yamaha synths are now that the prices are going up!

 that's a good one!

Maybe we should let these analog heads compare the real thing versus Sonic Core synths to see of they can tell a difference :D

Oh, I am just reinstalling my Scope. Something was eating up all my SSD space. Just hooked this bastard up to my A16 Ultra and put it through the SC RMX 160. Amazing sound! But man, it gets noisy at high volumes (hiss). I don't remember my Jupiter 6 having any noise.

Anyways, I'm just gonna test the MIDI in and out and leave the seller a good feedback.

Have had mine since 2010.
Great year for buying gear right before the new fake economy devalued property even more.
Just looked and 1200 USD is about as much as the fully loaded 1.2 OS units get.
Still pretty good value for 15 year old gear.
Slighty OT but the little Blofeld keyboard blended with FS1R is an incredibly
Well suited pair.
I was in a backwater Riverfront Casino called Metropolis and some kid was doing a cocktail set solo style that impressed the hell out of me.
Using presets not from the factory were so good I am driving through there tomorrow
and swapping with him.
Found out hes from Vegas.
Seems to make great money back here you have to say youre from Vegas.
For great pay in Vegas you tell them youre from Nashville.
