I see a lot of third parties that just sell presets. I've seen "sound designer" presets being sold by the original producers of the synth, but the third party thing is peculiar. I guess anyone is free to sell presets for anything? Or is there some sort of licensing? And do they even sell. It's hard to imagine an entire business revolving around making presets. Also, a bit of a problem is that many third party presets aren't impressive, usually covering familiar grounds and not much more.. Maybe I should make a kick ass bank and sell it.

lazy people who can't learn how things work and make their own presets don't really deserve to have gear, but if someone has more money than brains, let him spend it.

you dont need a license

you can create your presets as long as you dont copy internal pcm to another format

kidnero have been doing it for 30+ years

when you create a sound patch thats your copywrited material and you can charge or give it away for free

thats your choice and how it used to be done with hard to program synths

but back then it was on a floppy disk or ram card or sysex banks

today though in the internet world its hard to make a living from preset patches or samples

a lot of people just get them pirated which is a shame

i recently did new pcm floppy disks for the t1 t2ex/t3ex trinity and triton and still have not sold one floppy disk

the amount of hours that go into making good quality keymap multisample files with no clicks 1 floppy would take me 100 samples 25 sample keymaps edited looped formated for the instrument loaded into the instrument named and assigned to keys and the saved as a full pcm bank takes 40 hours

and then creating the presets to go with them takes another 40 hours for 200 patches

today people want every thing for free

these tronised sample banks im doing they take 61 x 10 secs +3 secs silence then i have to edit each sample for the correct level for each stereo channel

then i have to send it off .then has to be recorded to tape the tron way then that file gets sent back to me i then have to chop up each sample process for loop and and levels truncate then create a keymap

then save it to several formats then the formats go back to the person who tronised them and he has to cut and past them into the kontakt instrument

and then we both do presets

i end up giving away more samples than selling just to get them out there

its a dog eat dog game and hard to make a living from it i repair stuff also and sell used equipment which helps make a living

but with presets and samples its hard to actually inbed them kontakt 5 is good as its a format that has no conversion and you can bar them

but all other softs there are programs to convert your hard work to other formats that are sold on the bay

i even saw some one selling my actual transwave disks set on ebay as there own

yes, well THAT kind of preset production is DEFINITELY useful to all kinds of people. my first post was way too crusty.

The world is full of musicions who earn their money by playing chartsmusic or classicly defined 'instruments' by using the countless presets that are made for that.
Deserve and earn is the same word in my language

I can understand what you mean by that statement, but I think it's too easy.
If I'm a painter I buy my paint in the shop.
If I need a violin sound for a project or a gig I take the preset violin, no?
The drunk gamplers in the nightclub don't listen anyway...
Faith, Robin S., so much people made world hits from presets...should we nail them?
Some may roll on the floor of laughing by the statement but maybe are making totally outdated music but with homemade presets.

a preset violin is different than a synth patch, though. presets are nice and a good starting place, and they certainly have a place since not everyone is a synthesist....then it spills into compressors and gets really, really stupid.

Komplete 8 comes with over 13,000 presets plus Absynth has a random patch generator. Usually editing a preset is good enough but I work with making my own samples of acoustic instruments mainly.

dont know how the program synths but can play synths amazing

im good at synth and sound design i create material that others use

i make all my own sample material and synth presets

and im good at modular synth design for great playing instruments

but i really like making great start material for others to shape into something else that way

they are making something new from what i did not and that's the magic peoples creativity

using the base material and making something wonderful from it

that gives you satisfaction that they chose your sound scape material

and do wonderful things with it
