I've been using Windows 2000 for some time now for graphics so when version 3.0 of Pulsar came out I was eager to try it. This also was a good time to do a clean install of everthing since I just made a new computer (ASUS CUSL2 933 CPU and 512 ram with a 64 meg graphics card). I was careful to follow peoples instruction to install win2k in "standard mode". I'm currently using the STS 2000 module to play a piano set and I play very fast at times. Using 44.1 sampling rate I was unable to play without clicks and pops at any latency setting, even though I have 11 shark DSP chips and ULLI. After consulting with CW I was informed that "Windows ME is faster than Windows 2000 and Windows 98SE is faster than Windows ME" for Creamware products. The answer to me was clear. I downloaded version 4.5 of "98 Lite" and installed it with a clean version of Windows 98SE. Since then I am getting 4 milliseconds latency at 44.1 using a setup with 1/3 of my DSP power. I am finally very happy.

Useful info, Braincell. I have identical hdwr to you, and am trying to decide wither to go W2K or XP. Currently using 98Lite 4.0, like you, its fast and stable, but not easy to maintain. DLLs get lost on install/uninstalls, and now my Cubase won't run. Fixing problems like this is trickier with 98Lite than would be with full, normal OS install.

Three questions for you:

Which 98lite option did you use with 4.5 install? (I have "Micro")

Any missing DLLs or other small probs with 98Lite install, as were often reported with 4.0?

Do you run a Sequencer, and is it okay with 98Lite 4.5?

First of all I have since discovered that my experience may have been tainted by the fact that I forgot to install some very important ASUS motherboard drivers! which could partially account for the very slow speed of Creamware 3.0 under win2K, but for now I am going to use 98 Lite and see about stability. I do know that Windows 2000 uses a lot more ram and I am limited to 512 megs of ram on my motherboard. I would be interested to know how much RAM windows XP uses. If '98 isn't stable enough I'll try Windows XP. I used the second option in 98 Lite. The one that doesn't require the Windows 95 disk, also it's the preview version not the pro version. As far as removing drivers, I might suggest doing regular backups using a program such as "Drive Image" It requires either two hard drives or to have a large enough drive which is partitioned. You can even back up your system to CDs. Using this method you don't need virus protection either. I'll probably switch to Windows XP eventually. I might wait and see what other users have to say about XP and perhaps wait for a couple more minor upgrades to the Pulsar software but if Pulsar 3.0 is stable enough under Windows 98 Lite, I'll stick with that for a while.

Dunno if it works under 98lite, but I use system file checker (sfc.exe) regularly to check the health of important files.

It is installed during the normal 98SE installation.

Considering 98lite, I wonder what to look out for ?
