Yes, MIDI-OX works great for USB controllers.

I had developed a little prototype board, that would be a host to any midi class-compliant device (ie-no drivers needed), and output MIDI directly with no PC involved. thanks for reminding me to resurrect it and finish it! It did have no issues like high latency or jitter like a computer does.

sounds interesting!
so you mean a usb to din converter?
If you want to develope it any further, i think it should include a power supply to support bus powered devices (+5v i think). You could actually make it an option to take it from another usb port, instead of carrying around another psu for the thing your making.
i dont know if that makes sense but something like this:
Your device: Din output (midi) and usb input (from midikeys/controller)+ another usb input, only to be connected to another usb port on your computer - to take power and pass it on to bus powered midi keys/controllers) - or you could make this:
Your device: DIN output (midi) and usb input (form midikeys/controller)+ another normal small psu socket, to be connected to any wallwart that has +5 volts, OR to be connected to a usb port on any computer, via a usb to psu socket converter cable....
Or whatever - im sure you have thought out something much more clever
Let me know if you need anyone to test it. Im located in denmark, and can use a soldering iron and follow basic schematics.

All the soldering on this stuff is surface mount only ;( I'll try & bring it to life tomorrow, and if things work out well, I'll put up a post on youtube. Since I got my new laptop, that'll involved re-installing cross-compilers & such, so it could take some time. But's it is a project on my long to-do list of things I need for the studio. (My original need for it was to use my Axis49 keyboard from C-thru music to control my DSI Evolver).
