ok, isolated bass sounds a bit strange when pushed to almost full (track) level, but then it's about the instrument... no masking from background or drums...

Is that Dynatube ? I only had iPod earphones to listen so it was rattling them but the mettalic attacks and fretbuzz sounded authentic.

I fooled myself, as I was unaware that the project hadn't loaded Dynatube, but I found the sound pretty good.
Ok, it's an old school bass, as such a bit limited (probably) for most dance oriented stuff.
I wouldn't tweak it much further (in it's domain) and it's also enough substance for loop handling tools.

The sequence itself turned out less usable than expected though.
A part on the lower e-string is played by thumb upward strokes, which makes the buzz.
I found the change into more growling quite stunning as it partly acts like a compressor when playing force increases.

Could be an interesting experiment now to see if one can make decent Doof Doof music w/ a fret buzzy bass (instead of synth bass) and a sidechained kick.

Sounds really clean here on the laptop Tom.The low rasp is very clean and has definition. I will have a listen on my headphones too.

Sounds like there's a lot of compression and high gain which increases the hiss. Also sounds like the cabinet sound is part of the audio.

Had that on reel-to-reel as a schoolboy - the dude had always great bass sounds

It's a different device (the micpres are low impedance only and a hell of sensitive), an active impedance converter V357 (4 HiZ inputs into 2 transformer balanced outputs).
The 30 Ohm output isn't loaded properly by current Line-In devices (step-up transformer needed), makes it a cool headphone practice amp.
Seems that sound definition improved since adding an original PSU instead of the DIY thingy.

I'm wondering how much 'sound' is actually contributed by the hardware.
As broadcast gear it was designed to be neutral, but there's certainly some soundprint to it.
Players mention the extraordinairy responsiveness of the instrument signal when using these boxes for DI in the studio.

All tech stuff aside, it still amazes me how much (different) 'content' you get from just a plank with strings and a couple of coils if you carefully set it up. People generally seem to underestimate the influence of string tension and material, particularly on electric basses.
My kind of an Eq and ADSR curve.

I also can't help that those details become muddied up for a good part, even by devices as sophisticated as Dynatube (which I really like a lot).
It can of course fake the naturally 'muddy' situation of a hot driven live recording quite well, but I always use it together with at least a part of the clean signal.
But Dynatube becomes a favourite to tweak the iPad's ultra-synthetic sound into something more pleasing.

that leaves me a bit clueless... no, it doesn't nullify Dynatube at all... and I'm not into any 'cancellation tests' atm either
to be honest, my admiration for Leo Fender's ingenious mass-production crap is constantly growing over the years
that instrument is a temporary Frankenstein from a Japanese body and a Mexican neck, both basses < 400 bucks.
The recent Mex aquisition came with shabby quarterpounders (can't stand those), quickly replaced by Dimarzios, which gave a nice tone but were WAY over the top in fat and push.
Just sick - so switching the neck was the quickest way to ease curiosity and eventually hear it

My Jazzbass seems to get along much better with Dynatube.
@Wayne: thanks, DR has a great production quality, never tried the Lowriders yet, but I have flatwounds (traded from a friend) that must have seen 2 dozen different basses - and still in perfect shape. For sure they must make that stuff expensive if you only buy 1 set every 7 years (if at all)

We where together abroad, like in Estonia or something like that, you had your Fender and told me: “Do you like this slap sound?” It was such a wonderful sound, a little like Miller kind of sound, but punchier and brighter than his, it was perfect! I said: “Wow, yes, I truly like it, it is a great sound”. Then you passed me the bass, which was actually smaller than a real Fender, but the strings where sticky so I complained with you telling you that they were somehow muggy, you explained me something about the sound, and then added a big pedal which was quite ethereal and mystical, it was way cool You could play monophonic sound like in a synth. I played it for a few minutes and thought I liked Fender from now and on...

Then the bass would change its form, but it was meant to be like this, so I would adjust its color, shape and sound at will… of course I liked this particular Fender!

Makes Good sense though....
I love the bass of a true 3/4 Oscillator Analog Bass, nd since the freq's are so low the monophonic laws force the note offs, but I use 2 x SE-1Xs and accidentally had an overlapping split on my controller and discovered that doing a duo phonic lick here and there was a natural claimax as far as dynamics are concerned, and due to the low freq's thay had a very full harmonic structure on the Wolf Analyzer...

0don't forget it was a dreem anyway... the bass could change shape too...
