Novation SL mkII with Live

I got the novation sl mkII 49 for work related tracking (just bits and pieces) and man is integration with Live the worst thing ever. Automap for instruments works well, except you can't go back to an old project and start controlling your vstis with automap.. you actually need to load an automap "copy" of your vsti for it to work. So, all your old projects won't work.
And then with Live, host control features are extremely limited.. Even with all sort of knobs and faders, you can only use the fader section, to toggle between pan, and sends, and use buttons to arm / solo / mute... The left hand section, with 16 knobs and i dunno how many buttons, are completely useless in Live. (unless you switch over to automap mode, which is used to control vsti)
So.. which sequencer is Automap made for then? There's gotta be one that's the best for it.. Anyone know? Live definitely is not.
I also found that "customizable" in my case, works against me. I don't care if I can customize 50 buttons, knobs, and faders. I WON'T. When I need to track something very quickly, I don't have the time to. So, if the initial mapping is sensible, good. If not, I'm just going to ignore it, and tweak the vsti with the mouse like usual. Essentially, all knobs, buttons, faders, gone to waste. The only scenario I can see this useful in is if you have a particular way you set up the controls for a gig, and you practice and learn the setup until it's second nature. Now that can be valuable.
But I can't switch it around every time I make a new track. It takes too much time to set up, and it's too confusing... So, all this software customized hardware controller thing is cool in concept, but in practice, it's a little strange. It's definitely very, very hard to learn where things are because you can swap them around.
