I just noticed Cubase 5.5 is out and it's not just bug fixes. I didn't read anything about them fixing the export problems but there is some important information in the version history PDF file so download that. They want you to make some change in your BIOS if possible.

Basically what they're suggesting is an oversimplified way of saying Nehelem's PCU has issues with C1e & C6 (Core sleep) both. Disabling them does improve performance issues (there are some problems especially with Xeons because the data gets shifted to other cores and stalls the work etc.) By disabling all C-states you're keeping the cpu from clocking down at all, C1e & C6 are the ones that seem to be the major issue but of course any downclock 'reduces' performance. Setting the OS to high performance doesn't do this any longer because the PCU can decide to override OS hooks (speedstepping), so the BIOS route insures you have it set. PCU = Power Control Unit, a part of the Nehelem cores that is the size of the old 486SX (or was it the size of the DX?)

I mentioned this issue briefly in a recent thread under tech talk (running 32bit sequencer / vsti on 64bit systems, my only post) but there's considerably more information in an older thread I psoted under tech talk called Gearslutz thread on EIST, Speedstep, Turbo Boost etc

I like this version more. The loop browser is much better and the beat designer is fantastic. Maybe that was there before but I just found it because of the loop browser. The beat designer is very intuitive.

It's a pity that I can't seem to get the basic audio editing functions to work (like normalise, reverse etc.). Steinberg support have not been very helpful on this either. I was hoping a full install to 5.5 and trashing the Preferences would do the trick. It didn't. Very poor show.

It seems more stable to me but I did find an unknown bug. Support has the project. He said it's doing the same thing for him. It's nice to be able to prove a bug for once. Usually they think it's user error.

No probs with Cubase 5.5 here....reverse and normalise working as should be...

Nope, PC. Actually my mobo just died so when I get it back I'm going to uninstall and re-install from scratch. Maybe I've been away from Cubase too long and am not highlighting the area properly. However I got the 'silence' function to work on a highlighted area so I assume the process would be the same for the other functions. Do I need to designate a folder or somesuch to point the audio functions at?

That sounds rather abnormal to me, I just thought you meant mac when you said 'trash preferences' as that's a common term for OSX. I would wonder how you fare when you get your motherboard back properly functioning though...

Happy days. Computer is back. Decided to delete everything that had the word Steinberg on it, complete re-install from disc and then install the 5.5 update and finally I can normalise.

Check out the Beat Designer. It's sort of hidden as one of the many midi plugins.

hm, why midi plug-ins are still praised as a very new and ultimate feature?
As far as I can remember Cakewalk already used those midi plug-ins 15 years ago.

Zer: still missing them CAL's today Cubase's current Logical Editor doesn't do all that...
Also, where did the IPS go? Maybe they resurrect it in a couple years as a New Feature Worth The Upgrade Fee ;p

Brain can u post an mp3 of what you've done with beatdesigner / loopmash in the music section ? I might try them out instead of the Reason beatboxes....

If you use their drum patches, it takes seconds to arrange a beat. Start with Vinyl Kit in the loop browser and double click on it to create an instrument track. Next insert Beat Designer plugin.

Ok thanks I'll give it a go tonight - and watch the iPhone tutorial about it.
